I am not a big Comedy Central watcher unless we are talking about the animated series. The animated series are where it’s at. I rarely miss Lil Bush and I always make a point to watch South Park, especially the new episodes. I think the thing that I like most about Lil Bush is the entire idea of making fun of Bush. Maybe it’s that the real Bush acts about as old as his character or that all of the personalities, though meant to be comical, are pretty spot on.

Lil Bush lives in the White House with his parents, George H.W. (the president), Barbara, and his retarded brother with the incredibly strong head, Jeb. When he’s not spending time with the family he is with his friends the Lil Cronies. The Lil Cronies include Lil Condie, the obsessed George lover that has to deal with George loving someone chubbier than her (Lil Laura), Lil Rummy, the fall guy who always ends up taking the blame for everything the kids do, and Lil Chaney, the incredibly angry and bloodthirsty crony that can’t manage to speak more than a mumble (ra ra ra) and an occasional word.

When the Lil Cronies aren’t out trying to destroy the world they are messing with the Lil Dems. Lil Bill and Lil Hilary are always amusing. Lil Bill is often seen getting in trouble with Lil Hilary for spending time with the Lil Lewinsky Twins. There’s also Lil Al Gore, Lil Obama, Lil Kerry, Lil Putin, and a whole slew of other Lil non-Cronies, Dem or not. In the end, it’s always the Cronies against the world though and in Lil Bush’s quest to “become a decider” the world can become a very dangerous place!

Lewis Black's Root of All Evil DVD Box ArtMovie Info:
Cast: Lewis Black, Andrew Daly, Patton Oswald, Paul Tompkins, Andy Kindler, Greg Giraldo, Kathleen Madigan
Rating: Not Rated
Studio: Comedy Central

Release Info:
DVD Release Date: September 30, 2008
Online Availability: Amazon for $19.99

The idea behind Root of all Evil is simple. Two comics face off in a hilarious style of debate with two topics that are either incredibly random or incredibly unimportant. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are important or not because they are completely hilarious. There is just something funny about having two comedians face off in a debate about Kim Jong II and Tila Tequila. That might seem easy to answer for you (Kim Jong II, right?), but there are some more difficult choices included such as Weed vs. Beer (really, who can choose?).

Most of the episodes are more random than anything. For instance, Donald Trump vs. Viagra is one of the episodes that come to mind. I don’t know about you, but I would vote erections over comb-overs any day, but it’s still funny to hear these options fought out.

These episodes are all from the first season. It appears that the random nature of most of the episodes in the first season is seen as a downfall. Apparently, the second season is going to try and be more structured and make a little more sense in regards to the topics that are chosen.

The only major problem I noticed was the length of the show. If there was just one comedian discussing two ideas for 30 minutes with commercials it might not seem so bad. However, removing commercials brings the show to about 23 minutes and that’s not a lot of time for a show that has a structure (opening statements, time to debate, etc) and two people debating. Of course, looking at it from another angle, if it sucked, I probably would have said it was too long.

The episodes included in this set are:

Weed vs. Beer
YouTube vs. Porn
Las Vegas vs. The Human Body
American Idol vs. High School
Donald Trump vs. Viagra
Kim Jong II vs. Tila Tequila
Oprah vs. Catholic Church
Paris Hilton vs. Dick Cheney

I’ve been watching South Park since day one. I was a teenager back then. It was one of those shows your parents didn’t really want you to watch, but you didn’t care. At least, that’s how it was in my house. It’s hard not to like South Park. It’s crude, vulgar and offensive in every single way. We, as people, are not PC. Sure, we try to put on a valiant front, but every person has said something potentially bigoted in their life. South Park takes these taboo things and makes them the main emphasis of the story, even somewhat lesson learning for the four young boys who are the main protagonists of the show.

As far as longevity goes, South Park has capitalized on something that only a few other cartoons, such as The Simpsons, have done. Each episode of South Park is relevant to the time in which it was created. Matt and Trey have successfully used pop culture to keep South Park fresh and flavorful. Sure, there have been a few cruddy episodes, here and there, but overall, while in its 12th season, South Park still manages to be going strong with no signs of stopping.

The distinct personalities of the four boys, Stan Marsh (Trey Parker), Eric Cartman (Trey Parker), Kyle Broflovski (Matt Stone) and Kenny McCormick (Matt Stone) are what makes South Park so special and enjoyable. Kyle is the Jew that Cartman likes to pick on, as well as Stan’s best friend. Stan’s from your typical (ok, maybe not - Randy (his dad), is nuts!) American family. Kenny is the poor kid. Cartman is the fat kid, raised by a single mother, and most obviously, the bigot. Sometimes the boys are joined by Leopold “Butters” Stotz (Matt), in place of Kenny. Butters is the best character on the show, next to Cartman. It’s hard to describe him, but he’s definitely the most lovable (excluding his “What, What in the Butt” moment).

So, it’s about time the creators of South Park brought out a DVD dedicated to one of the show’s best characters, Eric Cartman. Now, if only they’d release the best of Butters, I’d be ecstatic. Until then, The Cult of Cartman - Revelations is more than enough to entertain me and remind me of all of the awesome (though some are particularly disturbing) moments that Cartman has had on the show.

I guess I just never knew anything about Duckman. Before this review, I had no idea Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man was based on a Dark Horse comic. Everett Peck created both the comic and the series. I did know about Up All Night. I found some of the movies shown on the USA Network block to be absolutely hilarious. That’s the station and block when Duckman aired from 1994 to 1997.

Okay, so maybe I didn’t watch this because I was only 13 when this first aired. I saw plenty of adult-oriented films, but never really watched adult-oriented cartoons. The show was on late at night because parents complained about their kids being dumb, seeing a cartoon and watching it. Parental supervision was the problem not the show, but needless to say, the show aired at obscure hours. I believe I did catch the occasional Duckman episode. I was a night owl, who missed a lot of school due to health problems. This made me the perfect candidate for watching late night television.

Back in the day, I couldn’t truly and completely appreciate the humor of Duckman. Sure, Conservatives have complained about the liberal nature of the humor and themes of the show. Then again, I’m not a Conservative, so I can fully enjoy this show in all its glory. The humor for Duckman isn’t exactly something I’d call mainstream. If you’re totally into One Tree Hill, then this might not be the show for you. This is one of those quirky yet cerebral shows, that has even those of us with brains that function on a high level scratching our heads at the absurdity of this series.

Fans of stand-up comedy should already be aware of Comedy Central Presents. Despite being a hit or miss show some nights, this is hands down one of the best shows to find good comedians. From Stephen Lynch to Dane Cook some of the best in the business have been represented. Still, like some of my favorites, some of my least favorite comedians have also been on this show. With this in mind, I will admit that there are times when I skip watching the show if I see it on the network.

DVDs like this are great because you can celebrate the show on your terms. If you like the comedians represented in a certain Comedy Central Presents set then it makes sense to pick it up. If you don’t, then you can save your money and avoid it altogether. In the case of Comedy Central Presents II I find it to be a mixed bag. There are a few pretty good forces of comedy here, but there are a few that really did nothing for me at all. Considering the set had more positive moments than negative, you probably won’t hear too many complaints out of me overall.

The The Best of Comedy Central Presents II Plot
There are plenty of comics to go through. The good news is that most of them are good. There are some duds, sadly, but the majority manage to be pretty decent. Dave Attell got things rolling to a good start. Attell is always a safe choice thanks to his hilarious act and his superstar comic status. There will be people that watch The Best of Comedy Central Presents II just for him. One of Attell’s funniest moments is when he offers advice on what to do if you’re caught masturbating. Add that in with all the drunken stories and you’re sure to have a good time on your hands.

John Oliver Terrifyng Times DVDTV Show Info:

Release Info:
DVD Box Set Release Date: August 19, 2008

It may sound funny to say, but Comedy Central tends to be hit or miss when it comes to stand up comedy. Sure, the majority of comedians on the network are pretty good, but it seems like there are a few that just aren’t worth any laughs. Luckily for me, John Oliver is a pretty funny guy. Now he claims to be shocking, but that’s all going to depend on your political affiliation and how far in the sand you prefer to bury your head. If you’re an ornery old coot like me, he will surely make you laugh, but I doubt you’ll find him too shocking.

I don’t typically watch The Daily Show, but watching this DVD helped me to discover that is what John Oliver is probably best known for, at this point. Oliver was, at one time, a correspondent on the show. However, if he keeps his comedy as fresh and interesting as it is here, he is bound for better things in the future.

The John Oliver: Terrifying Times Plot
From the minute you put the DVD in the player, Oliver begins his rant. On the DVD’s main menu Oliver appears to yell at you, just in case you might be stealing the DVD you are about to watch. This goes on for quite a few minute, but it can be bypassed if you really don’t want to hear it. Of course, if that’s the case then you probably did rip it off, and if that’s the case, then shame on you!

Thanks to the use of current events and the best (and worst) moments of pop culture, South Park is something that will only get old when the creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, want it to get old. Now, well over a decade old, this show about the misadventures of some elementary school kids in a sleepy mountain town is nothing short of classic. Even if you don’t watch the show, you’ve likely heard plenty about it. If you don’t watch, now might be the time to pick up a copy and reacquaint yourself, because things just continue to get better.

The eleventh season had a lot to live up to after the tenth season, which included the extremely popular (and seriously hilarious) “Make Love Not Warcraft.” That being said, I have to say that Trey and Matt always find a way to make things funnier than before because the eleventh season has some seriously funny episodes. In this season, you can see the entire class in South Park Elementary get lice, Hillary Clinton visits South Park and you learn about the importance of elementary school girls and the lists they make. You will also learn more about the Easter Bunny than you ever needed to know and Butters gets a chance to learn what bi-curious means…maybe. You even get a special appearance by Bono, who has it out for Randy when he is replaced as the person who took the biggest crap in the world.

Considering the fact that I am not familiar with Canadian television, like most Americans I had no clue about this show until it hit Comedy Central last year. Had I known that you could make a show by being a gross guy I would be a millionaire by now. My friends and I used to have a show like this, but we called it life. We would dare each other to see who could do the most ridiculous things only to force the loser into awfully humiliating tasks. It was great fun. Our competitions ranged from eating contests to things at work that I can’t even talk about, to little silly things like who could spit the furthest. We took them seriously though. Hell, I even practiced! So, it is nice to see such an interesting show land on my desk.

The rules of the show are simple. Kenny and Spenny (Spencer) are roommates that live together. These contests occur frequently. The loser is forced to go through with some humiliating task, usually picked by the winner of said competition. Depending on the competition, the rules include an agreed upon time period and special rules in case they are necessary. The show is not funny just because of the outrageous competitions they put themselves in, but because of the personalities of Kenny and Spenny. If I wasn’t laughing at the contest I was laughing at one of the two guys. It makes for a great show, assuming it’s in the right demographic, which it seems to be doing just fine with the Comedy Central crowd.
