Hip-Hop Star to Make Special Surprise Announcement

Grammy Award winner Eminem joins FAMILY GUY’s Stewie Griffin to host ANIMATION DOMINATION Sunday, May 17 on FOX. The evening will feature interstitials voiced by and featuring an animated version of the hip-hop superstar.

Fans should tune in for an exclusive surprise MySpace Music announcement they won’t want to miss and visit http://www.myspace.com/music that evening for additional details.

“It was a thrill to work with Stewie,” said Eminem about the youngest member of the Griffin clan. “I’m a big fan of talking babies and their humor.”

On working with Eminem, Stewie said “I was just about to meet him, but after I shook hands with his stylist, his assistant, his lawyer, his bodyguard, his other bodyguard, his photographer, his manager, his hanger-on, his flower girl, his driver, his videographer, his notary, his historian, his her-storian, his texter and his own greased-up deaf guy, I got the swine flu.”

On the season finale of FAMILY GUY airing Sunday, May 17 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT), Peter has his palm read by a psychic who reveals that he had a fascinating past life in the 17th century as Griffin Peterson, a dignified gentleman from the newly founded colony of Quahog who vied for the love of Lady Redbush. It was a time of great love and adventure where King Stewart reigned supreme, the smartest dog in the room was the court jester, army lieutenants were merely boys and even old England loved “How I Met Your Mother” (Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Radnor and Jason Segel guest-voice).

Eminem’s fifth full-length album, “Relapse,” is set to be released on May 19. The album’s debut single, “Crack a Bottle,” was released in February and set a first week record for digital sales at the time, while the first official single and video, “We Made You,” debuted in April. To date, Eminem has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide.

His previous studio album, “Encore,” reached No. 1 and dominated the charts in late 2004. The Grammy-nominated disc was certified quadruple-platinum, generated four Top 40 Hot 100 hits and has sold more than 11 million copies. In October 2008, Eminem published “Eminem: The Way I Am,” a compilation of thoughts, stories and memorabilia that entered The New York Times Best-Seller List at No. 11.

To set up the release, Scooter Smiff has whetted fan’s musical appetites with buzz releases of the title track “Head Of My Class,” featuring Chris Brown and “Fresh To Def.” With producers as diversified as Swizz Beatz, Eric Hudson, and Polow Da Don working on the debut release of Head Of My Class, it promises to be the ultimate tour-de-force for the urban teen music set.

If working on a new CD and the recent 52-city “Up Close and Personal” Chris Brown tour were not enough, Scooter Smiff is also an accomplished actor who played Daniel on the third season of the hit show Lost and makes his dramatic feature flick debut with Gardens Of The Night (opposite John Malkovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Tom Arnold and Evan Ross), where he plays a abused child named Young Donnie, will be hitting screens in the Winter.

And before you ask the question Scooter Smiff gets accosted with by fans the most, let’s let Scooter himself set the record straight: “I am called Scooter because of my grandma—when I was little, I couldn’t crawl, I just scooted, so she nicknamed me Scooter and it stuck!”

Scooter Smiff hopes to be doing a tour of his own around the release of Head of My Class and says he will also be hooking up again with Chris Brown on the road at some point.

If you want to check out more about Scooter you can check out his Myspace Page.

The home truths of ASHANTI’s “The Way That I Love You” are drawing a loud “Amen” from the radio and video outlets that have supported her from day one of her multi-platinum career as an artist and songwriter. The track is the No. 1 most-added song at Urban-formatted radio in it’s first week, with more than 50 adds at major stations blanketing the east, midwest, south and west coast.

The video clip of “The Way That I Love You” is an immediate add on BET, MTV Jams, and MTV Hits. Ashanti co-hosted BET’s 106th & Park to introduce the video and leak details of the new album. She also appeared on MTV’s TRL as part of Spankin’ New Music Week. The video reached the #1 spot with the most views on MTV.com and came in #2 on the TRL countdown in the first week. THE DECLARATION is scheduled for release June 3, 2008 on The Inc./Universal Motown. Album producers and collaborators include such luminaries as Robin Thicke, Jermaine Dupri, LT Hutton, Babyface, and Pharrell Williams.

THE TRUTH, the second Sho’Nuff /Capitol album by CHERISH, will be released on April 29th, 2008. As on their first RIAA gold certified album, Unappreciated, the four sisters of CHERISH (Farrah, Neosha, Felisha and Farron King) are primary songwriters throughout, and on this new project, they also collaborate with super-hot hitmaker Terius ‘The-Dream’ Nash. Album track producers include such top-tier names as Don Vito (“Killa”), Jazze Pha, Adonis & K-Fam, and Eric Hudson.

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: March 18, 2008

Every now and then something shows up on my desk and I immediately wonder why it was put out on DVD in the first place. Music awards shows like this are one of those things. I just don’t get the point. Don’t get me wrong. I am sure there are some decent performances to be watched, but in the end you have to wonder how many times someone is going to watch an award show.

I don’t know about you, but I rarely pull out my 1989 Academy Awards DVD for the same reason. If you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen it and you don’t need to see it again. If you didn’t see it the first time it still doesn’t warrant a purchase unless you’re too embarrassed to know that the Blockbuster employee was laughing at your rental choices the minute you shut the door on the store.

The release of the BET Hip Hop Awards 2007 on DVD just baffles me in so many ways. When I received my copy of this in the mail, initially I just stared at it. I flipped it over, examined the front and back of the box, but in the end it was still an award show. I didn’t see the appeal. After watching it, I still don’t see the appeal. If you’re a huge fan of BET award shows you might end up loving this. Otherwise, there is nothing worth watching here more than once.

Release Information:
Considering the fact that this is an awards show, the primary reason for purchasing it is going to be the performances that occur on the disc rather than the awards. In this case, this will be a popular choice with rap fans. This one disc DVD comes in a standard DVD case with the awards show and a small set of special features. You can pick up the BET Hip Hop Awards 2007 courtesy of BET and Paramount on March 18, 2007. At that time it will be available through various retailers including Amazon where it will cost you just under $20.

The BET Hip Hop Awards 2007 Plot
If you haven’t figured it out yet, this disc is absolutely unnecessary. Even if you’re the biggest rap fan on the planet, it’s still not worth a purchase. Maybe if they had offered an unrated performance or maybe if things weren’t set up the way they are on this disc my opinion might have changed, but they aren’t and the rushed and thrown together structure makes it worth tossing aside.

The BET Hip Hop Awards 2007 were set in Atlanta in October 2007. The goal was to bring together some of the biggest names in the industry. The goal was more or less accomplished, as people like Common, Nelly, Souljah Boy, Kanye, Lil’ Wayne, and Wyclef were all there. There were several awards given out, the most notable being Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performance, Producer of the Year, and Best Video.

Kanye starts off the show with a live performance of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Good Life”. This made things look as if there would be a good start to this disc. Kanye may be a whiny bitch (that’s how you can perceive his actions after him not winning awards at shows anyway) and not have the talent to know when to keep his mouth shut, but he is a hell of a performer. Complete with a full orchestra and some backup dancers this was a good way to start the show.

Now if everyone else would have kept up the pace, things would have been fine. The problem is, almost no one else was as good. This was one of the most boring shows in memory. The performances were thrown together or just plain boring (Lil’ Wayne, anyone?) and the entire show lacks complete purpose, unless it’s just to add one more trophy above someone’s fireplace.

This reminded me quite a bit of the MTV VMA award show though it wasn’t quite as good as MTV manages to make the show. Katt Williams is the host though I’ve never quite figured out why. Sure, he is able to stand there and announce things, but he is never funny, doesn’t spend too much time offering us anything worth value, and in the end never says a thing you’re likely to remember. He fulfilled his duties by actually being on the stage, but I don’t think I can say he did a good job in his post.

In between bits of awards you won’t remember and performances that were substandard at best, celebrity fans of hip hop stand up to tell us why they love hip hop. The funny thing is many of these celebrities do not give anyone any sort of original reason that a fan of the genre hasn’t heard before. Once the first guy stood up, all the others could have said “Me too” and saved us all some time. There was only one speech that stood out and that was David Banner. It wasn’t because he defended hip hop or gave us some new reason to appreciate the music. Instead he ranted about Michael Vick and made sure that he defended him instead. Had Vick been wrongly accused or in hip hop this might have made sense, but since he isn’t, it didn’t. It was just another snooze-worthy speech that could not end fast enough.

The awards were given out, but no one ever tells how votes are tabulated or who has a chance to vote for the winning celebrities. Not that it matters though because some of these awards make little sense or do not seem to have any purpose (Hip Hop Hustler of the Year, for example) and some of the presenters have not even reached celebrity status yet (if they ever will). The only other performance worth mentioning was Souljah Boy. It was his job to close the show and he did it with quite a bang. Not a good bang necessarily, but a bang nevertheless. There were pyrotechnics, dancers, and an elaborate scene, but in this end this big performance is by an artist that hasn’t proven what he can really do, so it is kind of shallow, at best.

The best part of this DVD was the cipher scenes (artists improvising to best their opponent) and the performances by West and Common. The cipher scenes are much better than anything else in the show. Filmed in black and white and shot separately, these scenes tend to pair an established artist with someone working the underground scene. It is interesting and entertaining to see the talent and ideas bounce from one creative soul to the next. However, it doesn’t say much for the show considering these bits usually don’t last more than a minute or two a piece.

After watching this it is easy to see that the bad outweighs the good. The fact that they want as much as they do for this bargain basement DVD is ridiculous. If it has any hope of being sold they need to lower the price to $5 or less and even then they are going to have to hope for a sale.

Storyline/Plot: 1.5 out of 5 stars
Replayability: 0 out of 5 stars
Acting: 2 out of 5 stars
Directing: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Audio/Visual:
The aspect ratio for this disc is 1.33:1 and it appears in a full screen format. While I did not see the original on television I am going to guess that this looks pretty similar. It’s not a perfect transfer, but it’s passable. There are some compression issues and some softness here and there. Otherwise, it works for what is necessary.

The audio is available in Dolby Stereo. While it passes for better or worse, it would have been more logical to bump things to a 5.1 mix since the average person is buying this just for the musical performances. I was not wowed by the audio, but it worked alright. It was average at best with little promising features to report.

One thing that is important to note is that this is actually the televised, edited performance. What that means is that there are words bleeped out of the tracks that have been performed live. Obviously, they could have allowed for an unedited disc, which would have better served the purpose, but they chose not to offer it for one reason or another. Additionally, the menus do not allow you to just choose performances. Instead you have to sit through or forward through things to get to the performers. Considering the performances are the prime selling point one would think they would be displayed more prominently. Unfortunately, that is by no means the case here.

Visual: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Audio: 2 out of 5 stars

Bonus Features:
There is only one extra on this disc and the only reason it is here is because of the botched plans for the show. T.I. was supposed to perform his single “Hurt” live at the awards. He was all set, going through practices and everything, but hours before the show occurred he was arrested on gun charges. In his place Busta Rhymes, David Banner, and Alfa Mega handled the job, but it was obviously not the same, despite being a decent performance. This feature allows you to watch the rehearsals to see T.I. gearing up for his performance. Even though it’s not his full performance, fans should like this nonetheless.

Bonus Features: 3 out of 5 stars

Bottom Line:
Maybe if this were put together better it would be worth a purchase. The fact of the matter is that this is a DVD that bleeps out your adult words and doesn’t give you a quick line to the music performances, which are the bread and butter of this disc. If you ended up taping this or putting it on your DVR you don’t even need this because minus the lone special feature it is exactly the same. When you take all the negatives here and you factor in the fact that they want you to pay nearly $20 for this, there is no way that I can recommend this DVD or justify its purchase.

Overall Rating: 1.79 out of 5 stars

I remember when Tupac Shakur died in 1996. I was a huge rap fan from the days dating back to my youth, when I listened to groups like NWA. During his career and in the years following his untimely death, Tupac has become the highest selling rap artist in the world.

His unique lyrical style mixed with some fly beats sent rap in an entirely new direction. With the help of Tupac and other rappers of his caliber, rap showed it political socio-economic capabilities. To say Tupac was a social activist would be an understatement. His lyrics blended the telling of stories about hardcore life in the ghetto, political issues, racism, and a host of other social problems he had personally experienced at some point in his life.

Best of Tupac is a compilation of some of the best music that Shakur wrote in his life. Through the effort of Shakur’s mother, Afeni, producers such as Eminem, Death Row/Interscope Records, and Universal Music Studios, this 2-part CD set has come to fruition. The first CD is released as Best of 2Pac – Part 1: Thug and the second CD is Best of 2Pac – Part 2: Life. The CDs are available individually and not in a pack. Each CD features 11 songs and nearly all of the songs will be familiar to those who have listened to Tupac’s music. Both CDs are selling on Amazon for around $10 a pop. They were released on December 4, 2007 by Interscope Records.

While some critics and fans have argued that there really isn’t anything new on this CD, there are a few previously unreleased songs. It is also a way to get some of Tupac’s most popular songs in a two disc set. You can check out what tracks are available through this review (below) or through an online retailer and evaluate whether you think the purchase is worth it based on what songs are available. While it would be interesting to go through and analyze each song, since I have heard nearly all of them previously, I wouldn’t truly be giving my first impression. I have my favorites on these two albums though some of the songs I like, but I’m not in love with them.

Best of 2Pac – Part 1: Thug features the following songs:

1. 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted
2. California Love
3. So Many Tears
4. I Ain’t Mad At Cha
5. How Do U Want It
6. Trapped
7. Changes
8. Hail Mary
9. Unconditional Love
10. Dear Mama
11. Resist The Temptation

Best of 2Pac – Part 2: Life features the following songs:

1. Definition Of A Thug Nigga
2. Still Ballin’
3. Until The End Of Time
4. Never Call U B**ch* Again
5. They Don’t Give A F**k About Us
6. Keep Ya Head Up
7. Ghetto Gospel
8. Brenda’s Got A Baby
9. Thugz Mansion
10. When I Get Free
11. Dopefiend’s Diner

While it is good to see Tupac getting more attention and I don’t mind the compilation, I assume a lot of fans already have CDs with many of these songs. What is new might not be worth it to every Tupac fan. If you are interested in hearing the songs, you can check out the previews on Amazon. Otherwise, these CDs are going to be up to the individual to purchase. While I’m glad to have a copy of each CD, I figure not everyone will want to spend their hard earned money on a CD with songs they’ve already heard and played a million times before.

I’m a big fan of hip hop and rap music. I’m selective in what I listen to, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from Necro, in his first album produced by Koch Records. Necro has been a part of the underground hip hop scene for years. Known for combining his love of heavy metal with rap and horror movies, I had no idea what I was going to find when I popped this CD into my player.

This review is being done live as I listen to the music. You will get my initial feelings and thoughts as I listen to the CD, and then I will provide an overall analysis of this CD at the end of this article.

The CD, Death Rap is Necro’s fifth album. It features 14 songs. Here is some information and my thoughts on each song on this album.

1. “Creepy Crawl” – I first noticed the funky beat had an old skool kind of feel to it. I can’t really even explain how weird the beat is for this song. I’m not sure where the metal sound came in on this, but most of it sounded like crazy rap to me. This wasn’t one of his best songs. We’re off to a bad start.
Grade: C-

2. “No Remorse” – I like the beat already. It has more of a metal feel to it then the last song. The lyrics are a bit more reflective of what I’d expect from a death rapper. I definitely like this song better than the last one. The chorus is a bit simplistic compared to other rappers. However, the rest of the lyrics are pretty damn fly. The background chorus sounds like a Gregorian type of chant and it’s pretty sweet. All of the elements of this song go together well.
Grade: A

3. “Some Get Back (Revenge)” – The lyrics, again, are pretty simplistic. I’m not sure if he was having an off day when he was trying to write for this album, but from what I know of Necro, he’s usually a lot wittier. The beat has that foreboding sound to it, but it is repetitious and I’m already getting a little sick of it. I can’t wait for this song to end. Luckily, this song was one of his shortest.
Grade: D

4. “Belligerent Gangsters” – One can only wonder what is in store just by looking at the song title. At the beginning I wanted to get up and start shouting “Fuck tha Police!” It just sort of reminded me of that type of song. The beat goes crazy and all over the place in this song and I’m not quite sure if I like it or not. Some of it sounds pretty ill and the other I just am not sure what he was trying to accomplish by changing the beat so drastically. I get the whole death rap feel in this song…and it isn’t just because the lyrics are kind of scary!
Grade: C+

5. “Suffocated by God’s Shadow” – Wow…this has a lot of metal in its sound. I just don’t expect that in the vast majority of rap. This song is definitely more of a death metal song. It seems like he can’t really merge the two without having some songs more rap/hip hop sounding and some more metal sounding. On this one, the lyrics are just plain stupid. I’m not sure what anything he says has to do with suffocating in God’s shadow. It’s like he just said it because it rhymed or sounded like it fit. This one is definitely my least favorite thus far, though it does have a few nice guitar rifts in it.
Grade: F

6. “Mutilate the Beat” – I like the name of this song. Let’s just hope it sounds as good as its title does. The lyrics and the beat appear to be slightly out of synch. The sound of the beat makes me feel like I’m in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. This song was very short and pretty pointless in terms of having a place on this album. The bit at the end where he comes back to rap after the song seems to end was just lame and didn’t add or increase to the value of this already worthless song.
Grade: D-

7. “Keep on Driving” – What are we in, the Partridge family? What’s with the Partridge sounding singers at the beginning? This one has better lyrics and a better beat once it gets into the actual song, though I feel it would be better without the whistling. Despite the weird, Keep on driving chorus, I like this song in comparison to the last 2-3 songs I’ve heard previously. I don’t think this has any type of death metal vibe whatsoever, and that’s okay unless you are expecting it.
Grade – B-

8. “Technician of Execution” – This is back to the foreboding feeling. It even mentions lists of things that can kill you from Muscular Dystrophy to AIDS. As someone who has a friend with MD, I’m not sure I like hearing a song called technician of execution that lists the disease as a killer. I can get his point, but what a weird song to write. The beat was okay and flowed with the lyrics, even if they were odd.
Grade: C

9. “Keeping it Real” – This sounds like “Suffocated by God’s Shadow” though it is more effective at mixing rap and metal. It has part rap, part metal, part rap and so on. It goes together okay and the lyrics are better than some of the previous songs on this CD. I’m not sure how in love I am with the metal sound on this CD.
Grade: C+

10. “Exploitation” – Funky beat. The lyrics are decent though I’ve heard better in his other songs. I can see the beat soon getting annoying as it is repetitious and not in a good way. The lyrics sound like they are an extension of “Technician of Execution”. This song is really short, which is good because I didn’t like it much.
Grade: D

11. “As Deadly as Can Be” – This repetitious beat isn’t so bad that it will get annoying instantly. The lyrics are graphic, so if you don’t like certain words you deem as bad I recommend you not listen to this song. This is the one I really noticed the offending lyrics in and though they didn’t offend me I can see the song offending others. Either way, this song is short. It is decent compared to most of the other songs on the album.
Grade: B-

12. “Evil Rules” – It starts off with a heavy metal feel. Where’s the rap/hip hop vibe? It’s so muted by the metal. The lyrics sound metal and they’re not as intense as other albums. I just don’t think I like this song much at all. It sounds like something you’d hear on WWE Raw. The chorus is just plain stupid!
Grade: D

13. “Foresnic Pathology” – This must be the acid trip song. It sounds funky, creepy, and the lyrics are very strange. I’ve been expecting that though. I guess the title fits the song, at least. That’s about its only redeeming quality. Did he say Dukakis looks like parmesan? WTF?!
Grade: D-

14.”Portrait of a Death Rapper” – Some woman who sounds like should be a Carpenter starts this song. This is the last one and I can’t say I’m disappointed to see it end. The rap sounds pretty good, but the rest just doesn’t fit together. The CD started and ended the same way…crappy.
Grade: C-

Overall, I think Necro has promise. He can rap. He can make music. He just needs to stop worrying about combining all these types of music together and just feel what he is writing/rapping/producing. I think this album fell short of his talent. I’ve heard past Necro albums are better. I only hope that is true. I only liked 1 song out of 14. That’s pretty bad. It sounded like a short, rushed, album and it wasn’t nearly as good as it could have been.If you are a Necro fan you might want this to add to your collection. Otherwise, I recommend looking this up on Amazon and trying the song previews out for this album before purchasing it.

The Gift of Gab and DJ, Chief XL rock a town that is known more for Jimi Hendrix’s guitar riffs and Starbucks induced insomnia spells as the emcee and producer move the crowd in Seattle’s Showbox Theatre with two turntables, a mic and a dope backing band.

The DVD version allows you to view the two parts separately or together, but after viewing the interview segments along side the crowd’s energy, you might consider these two the Roots Crew of the West Coast.

Backalicious bring all their best cuts to the performance like,“Alphabet Aerobics,” Green Light,” “Chemical Callisthenics” and a nice bit of storytelling on “Deception.” Of course, XL’s funkiest skills permeate every track, so much so that it often feels as if the tracks were always a part of the lyrics like an arm to a torso, or maybe, in this case, a really funky peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a crazy keyboard player mixed in. It is only during XL’s solo that this is not the case. The show also features guest spots by Lifesavas, Pigeon John and the one and only Fatlip of Pharcyde fame.

This concert is a must have for any fan of lyrics, funk and fun. It ain’t the same as bein’ there, but at least you don’t have to pay four dollars for water if you get sweaty from dancin’!’
