We grew up in the 1980s, so nobody knows the impact Michael Jackson had on the world (music and otherwise) more than our generation. We remember everyone moonwalking (even Chevy Chase moonwalked in the comedy movie, European Vacation), and though Dominick was only 1 (almost 2) when Thriller was released (and as such, doesn’t remember what a big deal it was), Ashtyn (at a mere 4 years old) recalls the impact of the album, how her much older brother reacted to it (he was 13) and how much she loved the music of Michael Jackson.

Shocked and saddened by the loss of a pop icon, since Jackson passed away last Thursday (July 25, 2009), we wish not to reflect upon the troublesome times in Jackson’s life. Instead, we prefer to look at all of the contributions he made to pop, music in general, and his impact in the music world. We’ll be counting back to number one through the top songs of Jackson’s solo career.

But…before we can do that, we need to mention all Michael did for the Jackson Five. We’ve listed his two biggest hits (and the two best Jackson Five songs he sang) in the spot of Honorable Mention. Without these songs or his popularity we have to wonder if Michael Jackson would have transformed into the pop legend he was.

While Michael had a great career with his brothers, it was truly his solo career that led him down the path to become the “King of Pop.” Constantly reinventing his song style, Jackson has inspired the likes of Justin Timberlake and other pop stars of today. His video and song premieres were massive launch events, where people gathered around to watch them on fledgling MTV and sat poised, listening to radio stations across the world. Michael Jackson owned the 80s and the world will never forget his contribution to music.

ATLANTIC SIGNS JASON CASTRO

ACCLAIMED SINGER/SONGWRITER SLATED TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM LATER THIS YEAR

Atlantic Records has announced the signing of singer/songwriter Jason Castro. The Texas-based tunesmith – best known as the third runner-up on the 2008 season of Fox’s American Idol – is currently hard at work on his debut album, set for release later this year. Among his creative collaborators are Grammy Award-winning producer John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Soul Asylum) and a number of acclaimed songwriters, including Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Jewel, Santana), Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall), Sacha Skarbek (James Blunt, Jason Mraz), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams), and Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat).

A multi-talented singer and guitarist, Jason Castro was among the most popular and talented artists in American Idol history, entering the record books as the first contestant ever to play an instrument on the show. His performance of the Leonard Cohen-penned classic “Hallelujah” proved such an audience favorite that cult hero Jeff Buckley’s rendition of the song hit #1 on the iTunes chart the following week, selling an astonishing 178,000 digital singles. Jason scored a chart-topping single of his own a few weeks later, when his interpretation of “Over The Rainbow” also hit #1 on iTunes after a show-stopping performance of the song on American Idol. Upon the season’s conclusion, Castro was among the stars of the hugely successful “American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008.”

Since then, Jason has been busy writing and woodshedding the new songs that will appear on his debut album. In December, he teamed with Amazon.com to release a free download of “White Christmas” as a special holiday gift to his fans. Castro has also recorded a new version of “Hallelujah,” which will be featured on the soundtrack to the film, Amar A Morir, to be released theatrically this summer.

In addition, Jason has been a prominent supporter of a variety of charity organizations. Last December saw him starring at a Garland, Texas Christmas concert benefitting the city’s Best Education Foundation. He has also been an active supporter of The Recording Academy’s MusiCares Foundation.

New York is having a “Shred Your Ex” party the day before Valentines Day. Radio Station WBLI has invited members of Rihanna’s Fan Club and other fans across the nation to join the pop star’s side along with others who are “unlucky in love.”

According to Nancy Cambino, the station’s operations manager, “Valentine’s Day should stand for love so we find it fitting to make the Friday the 13th right before Valentine’s Day a day for revenge for those who were unlucky in love. Whether you’re a Rihanna fan or not, we can all empathize with being with someone who caused love to go wrong.”

Statistically 40 percent of America will be alone on Valentines Day. Divorce rate is at an all-time high in the last few years, and radio station BLI wants to bring America together for a common cause.

We are sent new music to listen to all the time by artists that we have never heard before. Recently we received something by an artist known simply as LP. I popped the CD into the player knowing nothing about her, but by the time I was done listening, I was comfortable calling myself a fan.

The beginning of the summer just got really hot. Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt are back. The Grammy-nominated quintet kicks off the beginning of the summer in a big way with performances of and The 2008 MTV Movie Awards (June 1). The Dolls will also been seen hosting and performing on VH1’s “Maxim Hot 100” (premiering May 27) and their E! “True Hollywood Story” will premiere on May 23.

“When I Grow Up” is the first single from the follow-up to PCD, the 2005 debut album that put the Dolls on the global pop map. The Rodney Jerkins-produced track will be released commercially on May 27.

The Pussycat Dolls’ first album, PCD, has sold over 7 million copies worldwide, on the strength of 5 massive hit singles (“Don’t Cha,” “Stickwitu,” “Beep,” “Buttons” and “Wait a Minute.”) They toured the globe with The Black Eyed Peas and Christina Aguilera and made millions of fans along the way.
The Pussycat Dolls’ second album will be released later this summer.

Madonna turns 50 years old this year. I remember fondly when I was a child. I would put on shows for the neighborhood kids to her music. I had on the array of bracelets to complete my outfit and had the attitude down pat. I was the complete Madonna clone package. Well, except for the fact that I really was a virgin because I was under the age of ten at the time.

The attention on Madonna waned some after the Sex Book and a couple of years without music. Then she came back for a bit when she was tonguing Britney and Christina at the music awards. Eventually, it came to the point when I figured she would settle down with her husband, her sex toys, and her yoga. Well, I was wrong. She’s back and this time she is performing with Justin Timberlake.

I have to admit, yoga does a body good because for turning 50 she looks mighty fine. The video is pretty hot too. The reason that Madonna remains popular is because she has the ability to change with the times. Her music evolves and manages to be hot no matter what decade you are living in. It’s nice to see her back because so many of the pop princesses get stale so quickly. It’s nice to see something that you can dance to, as well.
