It’s summertime. Normally that might mean vacations and swimming, but to us it means a break from film school, updating our blogs, and watching all of the television we missed during the year. We’re currently on Shameless and loving it! Shameless is a show filled with great characters, in the Gallagher family, and out. While we love the Gallaghers and wouldn’t trade most of them for the world, some of the supporting cast make this show what it is and that would make us crazy for forgetting them.
With that in mind, we bring you our top 5 favorites from the Shameless crew.
We love Joan Cusack and the Emmys love her, too. Cusack’s portrayal of Sheila Jackson, a formally agoraphobic housewife with tendencies that require S&M in the bedroom is so perfect it’s hard to put into words. The first time she pulled out that marble dildo we almost passed out laughing. Sheila is the basketcase in all of us. She breaks down crying whenever something (no matter how trivial) is too much for her to endure, and when she’s not breaking down, she’s over-baking muffins. When she takes matters into her own hands where Hiram is concerned, we love her. We love her because she means well. I don’t know that I would want her to be my hospice nurse, but the way she handled Frank’s mom sure gave us a giggle. Sheila has managed to become much more than a small character where Shameless is concerned. While not always a vital part of the main storyline, we’d sure be sad to see her go.
As the real matriarch of the Gallagher clan, the five kids that Fiona does her best to care for couldn’t ask for a better sister/mom. Fiona sacrifices everything to make sure that the kids have a roof over their heads and a good family environment. Sure, she lets them drink, smoke, smoke dope, and have sex, but there are rules. You have to be 15 first before you can indulge in most of those activities. She’s the only one that’s ever stuck her neck out and sacrificed for these kids and they know it. It’s clear that she needs them as much as they need her, but the relationship works and that’s what is important. Fiona’s biggest flaw is that she is willing to let the kids hold her back when she could be doing something to better life for all of them. I guess when being a poor, abandoned white kid is all you know, you don’t want to think above or beyond that.
V is without a doubt one of the most entertaining characters on Shameless. She’s absolutely beautiful, incredibly down to earth, funny, and realistic about her situation. In a world as fucked up as the Gallagher’s, V gives us hope that things will get better. She has a way of making things better. She also has the most stable relationship of anyone on Shameless. The relationship that Kevin and V have is one that we would all be lucky enough to have. The sex is good, they laugh all the time, and it’s clear how much they love one another. As put together as V is, another nice thing about her is that she is more than willing to pull out that Ghetto crazy bitch, if she needs to protect someone she loves (mainly Kevin or the Gallagher kids).
Lip Gallagher is amazing and infuriating all at the same time. He’s a genius and the most likely of the Gallagher’s to leave the South side without going to prison. Despite that, he seems to have little interest in making the jump. Despite having such a bright future, Lip is more content with selling drugs, scamming yuppies, and having a good time with his friends and family. Even though Lip appears to be a slut that doesn’t care about anything, his actions make it clear that he has a conscience. He doesn’t always have the best taste in women, but I’d take Mandy over Karen any day.
Kevin “Kev” Ball
Kev is one of the best reasons I can think of to watch Shameless. Even though he’s supposed to be the neighbor that lives down the street Kev is an integral part of the show. I think we love Kev so much because he’s such a good person. Sure he has some shady side jobs sometimes, but it’s obvious how much he cares about people. He wants to have kids and we genuinely believe he would love them and raise them to the best of his ability. He’s a great neighbor, he’s always there for his friends when they need him, and he loves V enough to sacrifice just about anything for her. He’s a great guy and a much bigger character than I think anyone imagined he would be. Of course, that has something to do with the excellent portrayal of the character by Steve Howey.
