At the Theater: Movies Coming out in July 2013

Coming July 5

The Lone Ranger

Who’s a Part of This: Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter

What We Think: Why Johnny Depp? Why??? This is Pirates of the Caribbean on horses. There is a lot of big explosions. Johnny Depp appears to be the comic relief. It’s a lot of gratuitous spectacle, meant to move a franchise forward and make a lot of money. While we loved Pirates, Disney needs to get real. They need to start making movies because they need to be made, not just to make a quick buck because of the names attached to the project. While we believe people are going to fly to the theaters like little sheep, we won’t be wasting our $18 ($36 for the both of us) on this.

Despicable Me 2

Who’s a Part of This: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove
Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, Steve Coogan

What We Think: This has to be one of the most hilariously adorable trailers we’ve seen in a longtime. While we believe sequels are typically not as good as their predecessors, we think this looks like it is going to be great! The addition of Kristen Wiig is perfect for this kind of comedy. We like that this film and trailer do not seem to take themselves too seriously. It allows those of us who are adults to be childish without being ridiculous, and not many animated features do that anymore.

Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain

Who’s a Part of This: Kevin Hart …

What We Think: We had the following conversation in relation to this film:

Ashtyn: It’s about Kevin Hart…

Dominick: Isn’t he a wrestler?

Ashtyn: No, Kevin Hart, the comedian.

Dominick: Who?

We concur! Let me explain what, Kevin Hart and why do we care? While his other documentary seems to have good ratings, we don’t get why this is going to play in big movie theaters while other, better, more important documentaries get overlooked and placed in small art theaters, instead. We can wait for this to come out on DVD (or air on HBO), if we watch it at all, but paying $12 a ticket for this at the theater seems a waste of our time and money. There’s a reason comedians used to have HBO specials instead of big movie premieres. Perhaps Kevin Hart thinks he’s special. We don’t so we won’t be watching.

The Way, Way Back

Who’s a Part of This: Steve Carell, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, Toni Collette, Maya Rudolph, Liam James, Rob Corddry, Allison Janney

What We Think: At the beginning we thought this was going to be a nerdy kid, coming of age comedy we tend to hate. By the end of the trailer, this movie grew on us. While neither of us have Steve Carell fans, the rest of the cast is great. We particularly like Sam Rockwell and Toni Collette. This has enough humor to be funny without being stupid funny. While we will probably wait to see this when it comes out on DVD (we want to see it, but it’s not generally the type of movie we prefer), those who like films about teens and tweens going through the awkward parts of life, should dig this.
