What started out as a sketch on The Carol Burnett Show in the mid-70s, turned into one of the funniest sitcoms of the 80s. Nobody did dysfunction like Mama’s Family! Thelma Mae Harper might have been 65 years old, a widow, and rocking the silver blue hair, but she wouldn’t hesitate to beat you down with your purse if you had it comin!
Mama’s Family aired on NBC for six seasons and it all began, January 22, 1983. Now fans of the show can finally own the entire set in a brand new DVD collection. StarVista Entertainment/Time Life (in conjunction with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) will be offering Mama’s Family: The Complete Series. In fact, it’s currently for sale in pre-order right now. Fans of the show can pre-order the complete series for $199.95 at MamasFamilyDVDs.com
Mama’s Family is set in the fictional city of Raytown. As any fan knows, the entire show revolves around the Harper family and a few of their friends, with Mama Harper (Vicki Lawrence) at the helm. Say what you want about Mama, but she won’t care. She’s an old lady that is filled with fire. She won’t take your nonsense and if you’re stupid she will be the first to let you know. She’s filled with snappy retorts and no one is free from her dysfunctional blend of love and honesty.
The set includes a whopping 130, 30 minute episodes that lasted for six, amazing seasons. Each episode is filled with hilarious storylines and occasionally there are some rather heartwarming moments, too. This is the type of show that sitcom classics were made of. Along with Mama is Fran (Rue McClanahan – The Golden Girls), her journalist sister, Vint (Ken Berry – F Troop), her son, and Naomi (Dorothy Lyman) who is Vint’s wife. Mama’s two other daughters Ellen (Betty White – The Golden Girls) and Eunice (Carol Burnett), along with Eunice’s husband, Ed (Harvey Korman) also make appearances.
