Culver City, CA (12/8/08) With Congress and the American people focused on hearings that may decide the fate of Americas automakers, one question looms large: could the electric car have saved them from this predicament? From director/writer Chris Paine (driver of General Motors EV1 from 1998-2003) and Sony Pictures Classics comes the critically acclaimed documentary Who Killed The Electric Car? from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. A shocking who-done-it style documentary that takes the viewer on a murder mystery of sorts to discover the controversy and theories surrounding the demise of the EV1 by interviewing and investigating automakers, legislators, engineers, consumers, car enthusiasts and EV1 drivers. Narrated by Martin Sheen (TVs The West Wing), and featuring on-screen contributions by EV1 drivers Ed Begley, Jr. (TVs St. Elsewhere, The Accidental Tourist), Peter Horton (TVs Thirtysomething), Alexandra Paul (TVs Baywatch), and Ralph Nader, Who Killed The Electric Car? is available for the SRP of $14.94 and includes eleven bonus scenes and a Jump Starting the Future featurette.
Official selections of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and 2006 Toronto Film Festival, Who Killed The Electric Car? was hailed by the Boston Globe as a fierce, deftly entertaining work of muckraking journalism (Ty Burr); Premiere magazine wrote by the end of the film you actually come to mourn the passing of the EV1, a well-intentioned soul that was in the right place at the right time, but was surrounded by the wrong people (Ethan Alter); and Time magazine touted Chris Paines documentary makes an unapologetic case for the car and an unofficial indictment of the forces allied against it (Richard Corliss).
Synopsis
General Motors EV1 was among the fastest, most efficient production electric automobiles ever built. It produced zero emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert? Who Killed The Electric Car? chronicles the life and mysterious death of the GM EV1, examining its cultural and economic ripple effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business. Featuring EV1 driving Peter Horton, Ralph Nader and Alexandra Paul and interviews with a wide range of interested parties, from drivers to scientists and environmentalists to people who were part of GM’s EV1 sales team, and who remain committed believers today.
