This year, 2008, we saw some really good Documentary/Real Life DVDs Released. Here’s the Top Five:

#16 – The Universe: The Complete Season 1 Blu Ray

Okay, we know this is Blu Ray, but believe us when we say you MUST pick up this amazing documentary television series. The Universe is a series of episodes that explore the answers to the many problems looming here on Earth. Many of the questions posed have to do with whether we could leave Earth and find a new home, capable of sustaining life, in a way that we’ve dreamed about through movies. Since this is only available in Blu Ray, we decided that we simply had to add it to this Gift Guide. Cost: $29.99 on Amazon.

#17 – When We Left Earth – The NASA Missions (4-Disc Set in Limited Edition Tin)

A valuable resource for homeschooling parents or just those interested in Space and exploration, the Four Disc Set for The NASA Missions is worth its weight in Moon Stones. The Discovery Channel and NASA have joined forces to explore the last 50+ years, as we’re taken back on a journey through the history of space exploration, with thoughts on the future and the limitless nature of space. Get this for less than $40 for all your favorite space fans.

#18 – Growing Up Gift Pack

This Five DVD Gift Set is made up of “Growing Up Arctic,” “Growing Up Wildcats,” “Growing Up Safari,” “Growing Up Wilderness,” and “Growing Up Primates,” all from the Animal Planet “Growing Up” television series. With a plethora of baby animals and all of the information you’ll need to know about Growing Up in the wild, this series is excellent in learning environments and just watching for fun. This is a nature lover’s must have purchase this Christmas, and at $33.99, this set is well worth the price!

#19 – The Rape of Europa

One aspect of World War II, The Holocaust and the destruction of Europe before and after, which is rarely explored, is what the Nazi’s did with the beautiful art work. In this documentary, you’ll see exactly what the Nazis were capable of, in an entirely different way. As Joan Allen narrates this horrifically chilling documentary, you’ll be in awe, concerning an aspect of the war that was not only never explored before, but never spoken about…until now!

#20 – Mother Earth (IMAX) 10- Disc Set

See the beauty of Mother Earth while you still can. This gorgeously filmed documentary series features 10 IMAX-filmed DVDs, for a mere $89.99. With such beautifully wonderful cinematography and a look at all of the splendors that Earth offers, you’ll gain a new appreciation for all that we’ve been given as humans. Furthermore, you’ll want to do all you can to preserve this beauty and keep the Earth in the pristine state its in. We recommend this for everyone, though this would also make a fabulous educational supplement.
