As the youngest reviewer for LI Reviews, I often get stuck with the hip “youngster” shows. This usually consists of stuff from the CW and MTV. I wasn’t surprised to be asked to review Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season for that very reason. I reviewed the Season One and Two box set previously and deemed the show, funny but not really my cup of tea.

Sure, I like a good laugh. I like when people do extreme things and make asses of themselves. It just gets old after awhile. You can only do so many stupid things before it gets boring. Sadly, I think the producers of Rob & Big don’t get that it is time to move on. Sure, people will always watch stupid stuff, but eventually, over time, this show will lose viewers and the entire network will suffer. I, personally, just wish MTV will go back to what it was intended for as a network….music television. It was cool when the network showed videos. Now, it’s just a haven for bad reality series’.

For those of you not familiar with Rob & Big the show follows the lives of Rob Dyrdek and his best friend Big Black, aka Chris Boykin. Rob is a professional skateboarder and Big often takes on the role of his bodyguard. This is just another show about rich people living their lives, though these guys are funnier than most.

The Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season Plot
Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season is made up of 15 episodes. These are spread out across three discs. While this show is a reality show and doesn’t have as much substance as a fictionalized, serial show does, the entertainment value doesn’t necessarily have to be lacking. While I did like watching Rob & Big: The Complete Seasons 1&2, I didn’t fall in love with the show. Sadly, I feel Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season isn’t as good as the previous seasons. Still, it is good for a few laughs.

Here is a list of the episodes with descriptions.

Disc One

“Poop in the Pool” – When Rob and Big find a piece of poop in their pool, they are at first shocked then dismayed. They do everything in their power to find out who the culprit is (even giving one of their friends a polygraph), before making sure the security at their pool is heightened to prevent pooping in the pool from happening again.

“Racing Turtles” – Rob and Big visit a California bar where turtle racing is the hot sport. The two become addicted and decide to each find their own turtle to train and race. Surprisingly, this episode is funnier than it sounds.

“Mini-Horse Road Trip” – This show follows Rob & Big on a road trip to Northern California. During the trip, they show off their mini-horse, which performs in a mini-horse competition.

“Meaty Goes to Hollywood” – Rob and Big have a mascot/bulldog “Meat Bag” aka Meaty. The two decide that Meaty needs to be in Hollywood so they hire a talent agency to represent him. When Meaty ends up in a pet food company commercial (the company is run by Dick Van Patten), Rob and Big decide Meaty is better than pet food, so they try to get him on a Kashi “Best Friends” cereal box.

“Guinness” – Rob and Big want to be listed in the Guinness book of world records. Big decides to try and break some eating related records. Rob, on the other hand, plans to break some skateboarding records.

“Big Bob” – Rob is put in makeup and prosthetics. This turns him into a seven foot tall giant called Big Bob. His job is security and he has to try and find a way to do his job and walk as a “big guy”.

Disc Two

“Charity” – When a stranger is kind to them, Rob and Big decide to pass the kindness on. They give out free clothes and skateboards to the needy and then visit a retirement home.

“Harry the Healer” – Rob is going to prove to Big that alternative medicine can work, even if he has to go to great lengths to prove it!

“Dating Game” – Rob is being set up with a girl, but this time Big is going to host a dating show in their home to find Rob a woman. Only problem is, Rob tries to rig the game!

“Vegas” – The crew heads to Vegas for Drama’s 21st birthday. The party is marred when Rob and Big make fun of Drama only to end up surprising him with goodness in the end.

“Meaty’s Birthday” – It’s Meaty’s birthday and he’s celebrating Bulldog style. The boys decide to throw him a party at a bar designed to host dog parties!

“Parents” – Rob’s Mom and Dad visit Rob and Big in California. Rob decides he’s going to torture his parents for coming to see him.

Disc Three

“Cancun” – Rob and Big go to Cancun, Mexico with Drama and Bam Bam. They also want to record the song “Dirty Girl” while in Mexico.

“Haunted House” – When Rob turns to the supernatural, this time it is his mission to find out why a house has a rodent infestation. It isn’t long before he believes it is haunted.

“Baby” – When Big announces he’s about to be a dad, some big changes are about to happen for the duo.

Audio/Visual:
The visual quality could be better, but it’s what you’d expect from standard, full frames. While not as good as an anamorphic transfer, the video quality for Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season looks like you’d expect the show to look when it airs on MTV. Expect some moments of fuzziness and/or blur. There are some compression errors and the occasional edge enhancement. This shouldn’t be too distracting, but you’ll notice the quality isn’t perfect.

The audio for Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season is English Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo. This doesn’t offer subtitles, but closed captioning is available. The sound is clear and slightly better than the previous Rob & Big Box Set release. The sound isn’t really dynamic though. While the music sounds somewhat tinny, the dialogue is clear and easy to hear. Despite its flaws, it gets the job done.

Bonus Features:
There aren’t as many bonuses included in the Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season, as there were in the previous box set release. I’m only assuming this is true because that box set covered two seasons not one. That’s merely speculation on my part.

The bonuses for Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season start out with a clip show. This is known as “Best, Worst, and Unused”. As the name implies, this offers clips of the best, worst, and unused scenes from Rob & Big. Fans of the show might have already seen this when it aired mid-third season.

The biggest bonus is a set of deleted scenes. There are over 30 deleted scenes, making this nearly two hours worth of deleted scenes. There are some good moments, some bad moments and some just plain stupid moments. It’s kind of like watching a mish-mash of all the shows combined into one. Fans will like this bonus.

Finally, there is an audio commentary that isn’t really worth a mention, and some behind the scenes stuff. Overall, this section was quite disappointing!

Bonus Features: ★★½☆☆

Bottom Line:
If you’re into shows like Jackass and other hilarity-induced MTV based shows then you are shoe in to like Rob & Big. I don’t recommend this for everyone, not even myself. While I enjoyed watching this set of 15 episodes, I wouldn’t say this is the type of show I’d enjoy watching again. My recommendation is to check out Rob & Big on MTV before purchasing Rob & Big: The Complete Third Season. Otherwise, it might not be worth your time.
