Thanks to the use of current events and the best (and worst) moments of pop culture, South Park is something that will only get old when the creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, want it to get old. Now, well over a decade old, this show about the misadventures of some elementary school kids in a sleepy mountain town is nothing short of classic. Even if you don’t watch the show, you’ve likely heard plenty about it. If you don’t watch, now might be the time to pick up a copy and reacquaint yourself, because things just continue to get better.

The eleventh season had a lot to live up to after the tenth season, which included the extremely popular (and seriously hilarious) “Make Love Not Warcraft.” That being said, I have to say that Trey and Matt always find a way to make things funnier than before because the eleventh season has some seriously funny episodes. In this season, you can see the entire class in South Park Elementary get lice, Hillary Clinton visits South Park and you learn about the importance of elementary school girls and the lists they make. You will also learn more about the Easter Bunny than you ever needed to know and Butters gets a chance to learn what bi-curious means…maybe. You even get a special appearance by Bono, who has it out for Randy when he is replaced as the person who took the biggest crap in the world.

I have been watching South Park since the beginning. A friend informed me about some crudely drawn, belligerent elementary school kids, and I just had to see the show. This was back when Kenny died in every episode and Mrs. Garrison was Mr. Garrison. The show has come a long way since then, but it still feels new and fresh. As the new episodes roll around I cannot wait to see the trouble the kids will get into and the issues that Trey and Matt will take on or make fun of. I don’t often get a chance to just watch television anymore, but South Park is one of those guilty pleasures that Dominick and I can loaf around and laugh at whenever it’s on.

The South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season Plot
“With Apologies to Jesse Jackson” – Randy accidentally says the N-word while on Wheel of Fortune (he’s trying to win the jackpot, after all), causing him to have to deal with discrimination and a new embarrassing nickname, ‘that n!gger guy’. Meanwhile, Stan keeps trying to apologize to Token, who keeps saying Stan doesn’t get it and Cartman laughs so loudly at the little person brought into the school to teach tolerance that a fight ensues.

“Cartman Sucks” – After a sleepover, Cartman shows off his scrapbook that he has made of embarrassing Butters pictures. The latest prank picture that he took of Butters while he was sleeping has Cartman’s penis is Butters mouth. After realizing that this makes him gay he has no choice but to try to fix the situation. However, when the boys are caught (Butters is still unaware of what is going on), Cartman escapes only to leave Butters to be sent away to a Christian Camp meant to convert homosexuals to heterosexuals. Poor Butters has no clue about what bi-curious is, why the counselors keep trying to pray away the gay, or why all of his fellow campers keep trying to commit suicide.

“Lice Capades” – The kids at South Park Elementary get to deal with the classic elementary issue – Head lice! Everyone in Ms. Garrison’s class is affected, but she’s not saying who brought the first case to class. Cartman stirs things up causing everyone in class to start looking to everyone else as the cause.

“The Snuke” – Hillary Clinton comes to South Park campaigning and is shocked to discover that she has a snuke in her snizz. Meanwhile, a young Muslim student arrives in class and Cartman is certain that he is a terrorist.

“Fantastic Easter Special” – Stan has no idea what he is getting into when he asks why people paint Easter eggs and what that has to do with Jesus being resurrected. Before he knows it craziness ensues, men in bunny costumes are out to get him, and Stan discovers that his dad is a member of a secret Easter Bunny association.

“D-Yikes” – Mrs. Garrison loses a boyfriend and ends up taking it out on the class (women!). However, after visiting Les Bos she realizes that she shouldn’t be looking for men. She has her first lesbian experience and feels like a new woman! Meanwhile, the Persians go after the bar and Garrison and the other Lesbians have a standoff.

“Night of the Living Homeless” – A rash of homeless people infect the streets of South Park causing Cartman to get out his skateboard. People are attacked by the homeless change beggars. The town’s survivors hide in the mall, leaving the boys on the street to clear the streets of the homeless change zombies.

“Le Petite Tourette” – Cartman learns that kids with Tourette’s Syndrome get to say whatever they want. Naturally, this leads him to developing a case of the disorder. As he enjoys his power that allows him to say whatever he wants he is profiled on television, only to discover that there are drawbacks to abusing this new found power of his.

“More Crap” – Randy Marsh takes a large crap after he’s spent the last few weeks eating only PF Chang’s. He calls his friends to show the crap because it’s the largest crap ever. Since the Guinness Book won’t come out to look at his crap he calls a European Society that proclaims that Randy has beaten Bono as the king of crap. Randy and Bono end up competing for the championship as the world record holder of the biggest poop.

“Imaginationland” (I-III) – Cartman bets Kyle that leprechauns are real. The terms of the bet are that Kyle has to suck Cartman’s balls if they determine that leprechauns are real. Cartman finds out and spends the entire series of episodes trying to force Kyle to pay up on his debt. He even takes him to court! Meanwhile, some of the boys end up heading to Imaginationland where a war breaks out. It’s up to Butters to help the good reign over the evil.

“Guitar Queer-O” – Stan and Kyle use their allowance money to buy Guitar Hero. Stan is the true rockstar of the bunch and when he ditches Kyle to play on his own tour, Kyle ends up lost and alone, playing Guitar Hero in a bowling alley.

“The List” – The boys go insane trying to learn about some lists that the girls are making. Cartman manages to get the list and none of the boys can believe their eyes. Of course, this is just the icing on the cake as the girls aren’t done with the boys just yet.

South Park couldn’t get any better if it tried. As a season, this was filled with harsh realities that were translated into the funniest way possible. Fans of the show will thrive under the eleventh season and everyone else that is new may just become a fan because of what ensues. The people that don’t like it either need their sense of humors checked or they need to stop being so prudish.

Audio/Visual:
The animation might seem a little crude, but the visual quality is about as good as it gets for television these days. The colors here are bright, but not obnoxious. There is no color bleeding, the blacks are strong, and the picture is sharp overall. If you have seen other DVD releases for South Park then you know what to expect in this area. The quality here is as good or better as it has been in former releases.

Like the visual quality, the audio quality is fairly decent. There were a few moments where volume toggling was necessary, but the average part of the discs offered good sound and a dynamic setting. The audio is handled in a Dolby Digital stereo mix, as you might expect from a newer DVD. There are no alternative languages beyond the spoken English that is on the DVDs. Otherwise, you can take advantage of the Closed Captioning if you need it to enhance the viewing of the DVDs.

Bonus Features:
Every fan of South Park DVD sets knows that there usually isn’t a huge amount filling the bonus section. Of course, with a show as good as South Park the content speaks for itself and you don’t need any added extras. You receive some standard Comedy Central DVD previews and some small commentary tracks from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The commentaries are hilarious, but small. Either way they are worth listening to, so despite being the only real feature, things could have been far worse in this department.

Bonus Features: ★★★☆☆

Bottom Line:
South Park is just one of those shows that hits the mark and just keep hitting it even when other shows have come and gone during its run. If you want something irreverent, hilarious, and up to date then go with South Park. The animation is crude and the humor is brash, but leave it to these kids from Colorado to get their point across like no one else you’ve ever met. Check out this season South Park and if you haven’t seen the seasons before it, check out those, too.
