Considering the fact that I am not familiar with Canadian television, like most Americans I had no clue about this show until it hit Comedy Central last year. Had I known that you could make a show by being a gross guy I would be a millionaire by now. My friends and I used to have a show like this, but we called it life. We would dare each other to see who could do the most ridiculous things only to force the loser into awfully humiliating tasks. It was great fun. Our competitions ranged from eating contests to things at work that I can’t even talk about, to little silly things like who could spit the furthest. We took them seriously though. Hell, I even practiced! So, it is nice to see such an interesting show land on my desk.

The rules of the show are simple. Kenny and Spenny (Spencer) are roommates that live together. These contests occur frequently. The loser is forced to go through with some humiliating task, usually picked by the winner of said competition. Depending on the competition, the rules include an agreed upon time period and special rules in case they are necessary. The show is not funny just because of the outrageous competitions they put themselves in, but because of the personalities of Kenny and Spenny. If I wasn’t laughing at the contest I was laughing at one of the two guys. It makes for a great show, assuming it’s in the right demographic, which it seems to be doing just fine with the Comedy Central crowd.

The Kenny vs. Spenny Uncensored: Volume One Plot
Thanks to friends Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Kenny and Spenny were able to beef up production and find a home on Comedy Central. This DVD contains ten episodes of Kenny vs. Spenny. This two disc set is labeled as uncensored, however that is all in the eye of the beholder. While it is true that language has not been censored in this version of the show, naughty bits are blurred out. Not that you would want to be checking out the two guys on the show, but if you do (for whatever reason) you might end up sadly disappointed in this respect.

The first volume is sectioned off into two discs with five episodes per disc. The first disc includes “First Guy to Get a Boner Loses”, “Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart”, “Who Can Make the Best Viral Video”, “Who Can Eat the Most Meat”, and “First Guy to Get a Stain Loses”. The second set of episodes are “Who Can be Tied to a Goat the Longest”, “Who Can Handle the Most Torture”, “First Guy to Stop Singing Loses”, “Who Can Be Obese the Longest”, and “Who Can Commit the Most Crime”.

First Guy to Get a Boner Loses: These are all pretty self-explanatory, but in this particular episode, the guys are faced with a number of sexual temptations to see who has the greatest ability to not be affected.

Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart: It’s an all out farting contest and the biggest, baddest fart will allow one of the guys to win.

Who Can Make the Best Viral Video: It’s YouTube time with Kenny and Spenny. The boys make some films and see which one will get the most attention.

Who Can Eat the Most Meat: Its meat eating time and the guys need to eat as much meat as they can to reign supreme and see the other suffer a humiliating defeat.

First Guy to Get a Stain Loses: The guys are dressed in white from head to toe and they have to avoid getting dirty.

Who Can be Tied to a Goat the Longest: Yes you read that right. This competition is about who can be tied to a goat for the longest time.

Who Can Handle the Most Torture: Who can take the most abuse? That is what this episode is all about.

First Guy to Stop Singing Loses: The guys are forced to keep on singing or else one of them will end up losing.

Who Can Be Obese the Longest: The guys pack on an additional 80 pounds to see who can handle living the life of someone overweight

Who Can Commit the Most Crime: It’s all about who can commit the most criminal offenses this time. Lord knows they have done plenty of other things. It just seemed like it was time to add in the chance for jail time, too!

Don’t expect things to go according to plan. Kenny likes to cheat and Spenny is so blissfully ignorant he’s always acting as if he doesn’t know what’s going on. Then again, maybe that’s not an act. Either way, you have to enjoy the lengths these guys will go to give you some entertainment. If you liked Jackass you should love this. If you don’t, this will probably still make you laugh.

Audio/Visual:
Kenny vs. Spenny is shown at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in full screen video. Everything looks as good as it should for a newer television show. The colors are bright and the visual quality is sharp. I did not notice any problems with flickering or compression. The transfer came through nice and clean. Paramount and Comedy Central did a nice job overall.

While the video is good, the audio quality is standard at best. The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound works well, but considering the nature of the series the audio can be a little touch and go from time to time. Things like volume toggling weren’t necessary, but there were issues with sound distortion and fuzz. It’s obvious that the studios did the best they could. It’s not a bad transfer. It just has a few kinks that cannot be worked out.

Audio: ★★★☆☆

Bonus Features:
There are a number of special features spread out over these two discs. Two commentary tracks are offered on “Who Can Stay Tied to a Goat the Longest” and “Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart”. You can check out the videos that were made for the viral videos episode and there are sections where viewer mail was read, and a man on the street section is available for a few laughs, too. Some previews, trailers, and a small “Who Can Pick the Biggest Booger” competition round out the first disc. The second disc has some additional features including deleted scenes, songs, and we learn more information about Kenny and Spenny.

For example, I was shocked to learn that Kenny and Spencer do not live together. The townhouse that they use for the show has been rented for the show specifically. The idea of daily interaction may or may not be true, but what is known is that the guys aren’t roommates and that aspect of the show is purely fictional, at best.

Bonus Features: ★★★★☆

Bottom Line:
Kenny and Spenny didn’t really surprise me. I knew I would like it because it’s just one of those disgusting male-oriented shows that call to me. Not everyone will like this show, but if you ignore the fact that the entire premise is about two dudes competing and getting hurt so that they can make the other do humiliating things, then you might see that it’s not half bad. This will appeal mainly to younger men and the general Comedy Central viewing audience. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, I highly recommend checking it out.

Overall Rating: ★★★★☆
