Rating: R
Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: January 29, 2008

There is something utterly frightening about an unforeseen terrorist attack. What makes that fear even worse is knowing that someone you love is on the receiving end of the attack and while you might be safe, they could be dying. Films like this, when well made have a tendency to leave shivers running down your spine and raise questions of “What if”. These are inevitable signs of a good film. Right at your Door raises the idea of a chemical bomb being set off in a downtown area of Los Angeles where people are in traffic. Imagine going to work and not knowing that you are going to be trapped in a war zone before you make it to work. That’s the premise of this movie.

Right at your Door presents a very scary psychological horror without being a true horror movie. It also manages to evoke several emotions that run the gamut from good to bad. It may not be the best film I have seen and it certainly could have been made with a higher budget, but for what it is, it gets the job done. I wanted to see this because of the premise of the film though I honestly did not know what to expect. There were some ups and downs here, but overall I am glad that I saw this.

Damages DVDWriter: Various
Director: Various
Cast: Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Noah Bean, Ted Danson, Zeljko Ivanek, Tate Donovan
Rating: Not Rated
Studio: Sony Pictures
Release Date: January 29, 2008

FX is seriously becoming the home of the best original series on network television. The problem is that with all the amazing shows that are coming out, so few of them are being noticed right away. I know in my own case, I was not aware of many of the shows they have until I had a chance to review them. Once I did, I was hooked almost immediately.

Of all of the shows on FX I have seen though, Damages takes the cake! Addictive from start to finish, Damages has a solid storyline, a star studded cast, and everything necessary to build a hit show. Despite having a quiet first season, the show has been signed for additional seasons and the star of the show, Glenn Close, has walked away with a Golden Globe.

The first season may have 13 episodes, but it only took one to have me hooked. I had to know what was going to happen. I became increasingly thankful with each episode that I had the box set, because I don’t know how I would have waited each week to see the next episode. This series is fantastic in nearly every way and as you continue reading you will learn just what makes it so fantastic.

DVD Review: The Nines

January 28, 2008 @ 10:34 pm

The NinesWriter: John August
Director: John August
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Melissa McCarthy, Hope Davis, Elle Fanning, David Denman
Rating: R
Studio: Sony Pictures
Release Date: January 29, 2008

I’m well aware of the fact that not everyone is going to like the same movie. To find out what I’m talking about go to practically any movie on IMDB. I guarantee there will be at least one topic in the forum for the movie that has the title “Worst Movie Ever” or “I Don’t Get It”. I’ve seen a lot of bad movies, and trust me, most of the time, the movies they consider to be the “worst” aren’t even close to the dreadfulness I’ve watched on screen. That being said, I don’t think everyone is going to like the film that marks the “official” directorial debut of John August, The Nines.

That’s not to say that The Nines is bad because it’s not. In fact, I thought it was quite brilliant. Still, it’s hard for people to watch a movie that’s smarter than they are and not be offended when they just don’t “get it”. The Nines is one of those types of films. In the vast majority of cases, it will be the intellectuals and bohemians (the artists, the actors, etc.) who will appreciate this film. The rest may want to curl up with their copy of Navy Seals and watch that instead.
