When Lost first came on the air it was nearly an obsession for us. There is something special about a show that begins with a destructive, death-filled, plane wreck that leaves only a few survivors on a tropical island. Naturally, we, like most of the country, were enthralled. By the beginning of season two, our excitement had waned some and it got to the point where I took updates from my mom and Dom ignored the show altogether. When I decided to do the review for Lost: The Complete Third Season I was expecting something in between seasons one and two in terms of the quality of the show. I had heard that season three had returned to the original quality from season one. No one told me that the show would actually end up being better than the first season.

It’s rare for any show to find a way to make the quality better as the show goes along. While there were some bumps along the way, Lost has managed to do just that. Season three is not only good, it’s addicting. It’s filled with plenty of action, flashbacks, and mystery. You might not be able to solve the mystery of the island just yet, but the character dynamics are fascinating, and you want to know what’s going to happen next. It will be a sad day when the mystery is solved because the show will end. However, that day is nowhere in sight for now and the best show in television will be set to begin its fourth season at the end of January 2008.

Release Information:
On December 11, 2007 Lost: The Complete Third Season was released for the first time on DVD. This set offers seven discs and all of the episodes that aired in season three. Each disc offers three or four episodes with a play all feature and various special features. Buena Vista Home Entertainment released this set just in time to be the perfect holiday gift. Lost fans will not want to miss picking this fabulous set up at the store. You can find it on Amazon for under $40, but it’s possible there will be various sales to encourage holiday buying.

The Lost: The Complete Third SeasonPlot
At the end of season two, Jack, Sawyer, and Kate were kidnapped by The Others. The third season picks up right where the second left off. Jack is trapped in a room in a building that The Others have trapped him in and Kate and Sawyer end up on work detail when they are not in their outdoor cages, which have become their new homes. Many of the first episodes in this season deal with the impending love triangle of Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. These episodes make up for the strong romance/relationship elements by adding in plenty of information and flashbacks about The Others.

This season is interesting because it goes places where it has not been before. The Others add a new element to the show. While many of The Others stay in the background and are nothing more than names and faces, there are a few who emerge past and present for the betterment of the show. Ben (Michael Emerson), the head Other is simply creepy with his big eyes and his devious plans. It is not always known what his plans are, but he makes the others listen to him and the will of Jacob, someone no one can see, but Ben. Another Other we learn quite a bit about is Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell – Santa Claus 3). Juliet is interesting because she will present a new element to a new love triangle, the one that includes Jack and Kate.

There are only a couple of filler episodes this season, but with Lost being the way it is, it’s possible that the information provided in these episodes will come in handy later. Episodes concerning Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro – 300) and Nikki’s (Kiele Sanchez) flashbacks are unnecessary as they have never really been major players. While interesting, these episodes, specifically “Expose” just did not seem to further the storyline in any way. That isn’t to say they won’t be beneficial in the future. They just aren’t important now.

While many of the episodes rely on The Others and their diabolical plans, when it comes to the group from the plane crash, John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) is the dynamic presence this season. Finding out about the various phases of his life and seeing where those moments lead him are astounding to watch. The same can be said for Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), whose story is quite interesting this season, with flashbacks of his past and the thought that he will be dying thanks to the visions of Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick).

It’s impossible to go into too much detail without giving too much away and I don’t want to do that and ruin it for those who haven’t seen this season yet. Needless to say this is the best season of the show, in my opinion. From beginning to end, Lost: The Complete Third Season will shock you with its twists and turns and leave you wanting more.

Speaking of more, is it January 31st yet?

Audio/Visual:
Lost: The Complete Third Season offers an excellent video and audio quality. The video is available in anamorphic widescreen with a compression ratio of 1.78:1. The picture could not be better on a standard DVD. The colors are sharp and everything comes through perfectly. The audio follows suit with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. It comes through loud and clear with booming sound effects and absolutely clear dialogue. Subtitles are available in both English and Spanish for those that need them.

Bonus Features:
Lost: The Complete Third Season is filled with special features. Over the seven discs there is over six hours of bonus features. You are offered several standards that you may have come to expect from Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases. These standards include deleted scenes (nine of them), bloopers, and audio commentaries. Interviews are available in “The World of the Others”, which offers thoughts from cast and crew about the crucial role that the Others play in the show. New flashbacks are offered in “Lost Flashbacks”.

“Lost in a Day” goes through the routine of what it takes to create such a dynamic television show. Fans will follow cameras around the country and see everything from writing to production in various forms. Ten episodes are looked at in more detail in the featurette, “Lost on Location” and “The Lost Book Club” shows the role of literature that is played upon in this series.

The last featurettes come in the form of separate videos. The first is the Dharma Initiative video, “Orchid Instructional Video” that shows the instructions for Station Six. Unfortunately, something goes wrong during filming and things become even more mysterious than they are. The last video is what Karl was forced to watch after Ben kidnapped him and locked him in a room.

Bonus Features: ★★★★★

Bottom Line:
If you buy one DVD box set this year, buy Lost: The Complete Third Season. From start to finish this season is everything I could have hoped for and more. There was plenty of suspense, some touching moments, action, and drama. The acting was perfect, the quality was superb, and I cannot wait to re-watch this season in anticipation for season four. If you have not seen Lost I highly recommend checking season three out along with season one.
