Scrubs is popular enough to be in its seventh season. The show is one of the few remaining sitcoms on the air. The sitcom was believed to have died with the departure of shows like Seinfeld, but just when everyone thought the sitcom was dead and gone, Scrubs debuted on NBC. The sitcom was reinvented with this show and the ensemble cast that made up the Scrubs “bunch” has defined itself as some of the best comedic actors currently in Hollywood.

Season Six allows for some pretty meaty storylines, and unfortunately, in this season not all of them hit the spot. Still, the overall season is enjoyable, plus there are so many funny moments included in this DVD box set that it makes up for the various development problems that arise during this season.

Release Information:
Scrubs debuted on NBC on October 21, 2001. Since then, the show has been going strong. Currently in its seventh season, the latest batch of Scrubs episodes premiered on October 25, 2007. On October 30, 2007, Vista Home Entertainment and Touchstone released the three disc box set for Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season. This box set contains 522 minutes of Scrubs episodes. There are 22 episodes in Season Six, which aired on television from November 30, 2006 until May 17, 2007.

The Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season Plot
Scrubs was created by Bill Lawrence, who is the genius behind Spin City. His ability to create a comedy that is so perfectly balanced with reality and fiction is part of the success of this long running sitcom. While Scrubs has some of the funniest moments on television it also has the ability to be heartfelt, sincere, and unforgiving. Striking up a harmonious balance between all of the elements that have made Scrubs so successful is part of the brilliance behind Lawrence.

The show started with a large ensemble cast and focused on the lives of a group of interns at Sacred Heart Hospital. In many ways, the primary purpose of the show is similar to the drama series Grey’s Anatomy though you should cross Grey’s with a witty cartoon television show to get Scrubs. The two shows are drastically different despite any similarities to the contrary.

The storylines follow the lives of JD aka John Dorian (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison), and Elliot (Sarah Chalke), who all started out as interns. The higher ups and other central characters on the show include Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), Cox’s ex-wife, Jordan Sullivan (Christa Miller – Bill Lawrence’s real life wife), Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the janitor (Neil Flynn), and Nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes). The show tackles relationships, health problems, one hospital crisis after another, and life in general.

In the sixth season of Scrubs, the central plots (and downfalls) follow the story of JD on his quest to find the one. We all know its Elliot. Why he doesn’t get it is anyone’s guess. There are more than enough ways for JD’s woman hunt to go. Unfortunately, Lawrence and his team of writers and directors chose more than one wrong direction. From JD finding out his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Kim Briggs (Elizabeth Banks) is pregnant with his child to Elliot’s former sorority sister, Melody (Kari Russell) having a brief interlude with him, there are plenty of women moving in and out of JD’s life.

Meanwhile, Turk and Carla are dealing with life with a new baby. Carla deals with postpartum depression as Turk encourages JD to be as much a part of the development of his unborn baby’s life as he can. Finally, Elliot faces the prospect of marriage to Keith as JD questions just how he feels about Elliot. Of course, the comedic janitor, and his personal vendetta against JD make an appearance in this season, as well.

Some of the best episodes of Scrubs’ sixth season include “My Cold Shower”, “My Long Goodbye”, “My Scrubs”, and “My Night to Remember”. The last episode mentioned features a variety of clips from former seasons of Scrubs. It is great to see some of the earlier episodes. It’s a nice reminder during this less than spectacular season to see what made Scrubs such an amazing show and why it is still on television today, despite a few bumps and tumbles.

Audio/Visual:
Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season has the visual quality that is exactly the same format as it is when you see it on television. The video quality is in full frames and was transferred at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. While the quality looks good there are occasional problems with grit and grain as well as issues with the edge of the picture flickering and the occasional compression artifact.

The audio quality is the best you can expect for your standard DVD. It’s presented as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. I didn’t have any trouble hearing anything. The sound came through loud and clear.

Bonus Features:
The bonus features on Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season DVD start out with commentary on every episode of the season. There is a play all option so you can play every episode with commentary and different cast members contribute to various episodes. This is the first Scrubs DVD to have commentary on every single episode.

The episodes are split amongst the first two discs in this set and the third contains bonus features including featurettes such as “The Third Tier” (about Scrubs supporting cast members), “The Debra and Stephanie Show” feature, alternate scenes, “Judy Reyes Keeps Talking” (a featurette on Judy Reyes and her role as Carla), alternate lines, and “My Making of: My Musical” (which discusses the making of the “My Musical” episode).

Bonus Features: ★★★★☆

Bottom Line:
Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season has a few minor problems in the eyes of the audience. Though they really are not technically plot holes (they’re just things that really annoyed the audience), this season just wasn’t as good as past seasons of Scrubs. Still, the show still retains its humor, its comedy, and it looks like the next season is aiming to rectify many of the problems the show seems to have faced in the sixth season. Despite all its problems, Scrubs – The Complete Sixth Season is a recommended purchase for fans of the show and those looking for an entertaining sitcom to watch.
