The 90s was filled with many humorous sitcoms. One of these shows was Wings. Wings aired throughout most of the decade before it was cancelled after eight seasons. I recall watching the show when I was home during its timeslot. However, it wasn’t one of those shows that I went out of my way to watch. I just always seemed to be around and catch it when it was on. I thought that Wings was a fun television show with entertaining comedy and a great cast. This show made Steven Weber a household name and was a significant turning point in his career.
Today, Wings airs regularly on TV Land. There are plenty of reruns to watch, which is good considering the fact that there aren’t many sitcoms anymore, at least not any that are quite as funny as Wings was.
Release Information:
Wings first aired on NBC on April 19, 1990. It ran for eight seasons until May 21, 1997. By then, the show just didn’t have the same appeal it had when it first started. It was time for the show to end, and sadly, it was closing in on the ending of many other great sitcoms including Cheers, which ended a few years before in 1993 and Seinfeld, which ended in 1998.
On November 6, 2007, Paramount Home Video is set to release a DVD box set with four discs. This DVD Box Set features The Complete Fifth Season of Wings, which is Unrated and has a retail value of $38.99.
The Wings – The Complete Fifth Season Plot
Wings had a fun story that revolved around the antics in a small, Nantucket airport, Tom Nevers Field. The creators of Wings were experienced when it came to sitcoms. The trio, David Angell, David Lee, and Peter Casey have developed other sitcoms including Cheers and Fraiser. This is why there were some crossover stories between characters on Wings and Cheers.
Wings tells the story of the Hackett Brothers. The duo is in charge of Tom Nevers Field. Older brother, Joe (Tim Daly), is the neurotic one in the bunch. Joe is a pilot. He owns a flight business known as “Sandpaper Air”. Joe is accompanied by his wild brother, Brian (Steven Weber) who is pretty much Joe’s polar opposite. Brian is very smart (enough to go to Princeton though he quits, and get in the astronaut program at NASA though he is expelled). He is just not overly motivated when it comes to accomplishing anything and doing something with his life.
The Hackett brothers run the airport with their longtime friend, Helen. Helen is in love with Joe, though at this point, in Season Five, the two have not declared their love for one another. In this season, the two Hacketts and Helen still deal with relationships with others, antics at the airport, and things that happen to their quirky friends. Speaking of friends, Wings has some crazy characters on the show. One of the oddest characters is the only other employee of Sandpaper Air, Fay Evelyn Schlob Dumbly DeVay Cochran (Rebecca Schull). Fay is a former stewardess who has three deceased husbands (all named George). Fay is good hearted and motherly towards Joe, Brian, and Helen, though she does act at bit strange at times. There is also the competition for Sandpiper Air and Joe and Brian in the form of Roy Biggins (David Schramm). Roy runs the only other airline in Nantucket, Aeromass, though he is less successful at charter flights then the Wings’s crew.
In season five of Wings, there are 24 episodes. In this season, Brian spends time with and without his girlfriend Alex. Helen is courted by a man named Davis, and Joe finally accepts his feelings for Helen. Of course, that’s not all. There are several other, non-relationship moments including the episode where Roy gets a makeover and Fay and Helen attempt to have a Christmas Eve party. Favorite episodes on the four Wings discs include “An Affair to Forget”, “Good 2 B 4 Gotten”, “Ready, Teddy, Go”, “Hey Nineteen” and “Roy Crazy”.
Audio/Visual:
The video for Wings is decent. You will find very few compression errors and the transfer, which is in full frames, was done at a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Wings has some slight grain in a few spots, but otherwise is pretty good. For a show made in the 90s, the picture looks pretty good, though not as good as the shows of today. Still, the picture shouldn’t affect your viewing pleasure.
The audio for Wings is fair as it is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Sound. It would have been nice to have Dolby Digital 5.1, but it is listenable. Still, some playing with the remote may be necessary since the sound isn’t as good as it could or should be. Closed Captioning is available, so if you wish to hear what is going on without fooling with the volume, you can turn this on and read the words as opposed to just listening to them.
Bonus Features:
Fans of Wings will be disappointed to know that there are no extras included on this four disc set. With so many older television shows having some bonuses, there really is no excuse for Wings to not have any included.
|
Bottom Line: Wings is a fun sitcom that has some pretty crazy moments. If you like sitcoms, then you need to check out Wings. With the humor of Cheers in a new location what’s not to like about Wings? While this season isn’t as good as past seasons, it is still interesting enough to keep fans of the series happy. If you haven’t seen Wings before you purchase it, you might want to check out reruns on TV Land or rent the DVD. If you like the show, this DVD is worth the purchase. |

I've been married to Andrea for 13 years this December. One thing I've learned about married life is to always expect the unexpected. After nearly eleven years with just the three of us, and our Golden Retriever, Braeden, I've just found out I'm going to be a dad again. In my professional life, I'm a bit of a cyber geek. I enjoy D&D, writing stories, role-playing, computer games, working on websites, and just hanging out. I work for a computer firm doing computer-tech type work and that's all I can really say about my job. In my fantasy life, I escape to the world of film. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen The Return of the King at least 37 times. I signed up to review movies, and you can guarantee I'll do the job right.
