When the trailers first came out for The Invisible I knew it was on my must see list. With a tagline like, “Together they must solve his murder….before it’s too late,” I knew that I was in. However, from the time that it took from trailer to DVD I had forgotten about the movie until it ended up being delivered for this review.
The Invisible has received some harsh reviews by other critics. People didn’t like it. They felt it was too amateurish. Well, first of all, this is PG13 so it’s not going to be too bad. Second, I feel it should be pointed out that while this movie was somewhat marketed as a horror/thriller that is not necessarily the case. While there is a mystery, you are in on the bulk of it for most of the time. You are just waiting to find out the ending and even that could be easy to figure out with a little deductive reasoning.
Release Info:
The Invisible was released by Disney on October 16, 2007. The audio is in English and offers both Spanish and French subtitles and captions. There are many basic special features included in release of The Invisible. For information on special features continue reading the section labeled special features.
The Invisible Plot:
Nick Powell (Justin Chatwin) is the kid who seems to have pretty much everything. He’s a smart kid who has plans of going to England to become a writer. Despite having a slightly overbearing mother (Marcia Gay Harden) he is not willing to let anything stand in the way of his goals. That is, until the day when something stands in his way that he cannot find a way around. That thing standing in his way is Annie Newton (Margarita Levieva).
One night, Nick is mistaken for someone else and is beaten to death or what the people doing the beating think is death and Nick’s body is hidden in an attempt to cover up a murder. There is a problem though because Nick’s not really dead. His soul is wandering around and he needs to find out where his body is and get someone to find it, otherwise he will die. There is only one person that can help him and that’s Annie.
The movie becomes a chase for life and against death. Nick’s only goal is to get Annie to listen and see if she has what it takes to help him before it’s too late. There are elements of this movie that remind me of Ghost. The mystery part is lacking because you understand the goal almost immediately. The mystery comes in finding whether or not Nick will be discovered in time and how much will unravel around him in the process.
Audio/Video:
The video for The Invisible is presented in a widescreen anamorphic format that turned out beautiful. There was very little, if any grain. The colors were clear and the presentation was completely pleasing. The video was compressed at a ratio of 2.35:1, which explains why everything looks so perfect. Meanwhile, the audio is far from a disappointment as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound was used. Both audio and video couldn’t be nicer in a standard DVD format.
Special Features:
The special features here are pretty standard. There are close to 15 minutes of deleted scenes and audio commentaries with the writers (Christine Roum and Mick Davis) and the Director (David S. Goyer). Other than that you are offered two music videos. The videos offered are 30 Seconds to Mars – “The Kill” and Sparta – “Taking Back Control.”
Bottom Line:
I wanted to see this movie immediately and then I made the mistake of reading what some Internet critics had to say. I was a little bit nervous, but when it came down to it, there were many elements of this movie that I liked. It is something you can watch and something I would not mind seeing again. The acting, especially Chatwin and Levieva led the film quite well. The scenes are reminiscent of Ghost and I enjoyed them the most. Otherwise, I found The Invisible scenes watchable but uneventful. Check it out and if you like it, don’t hesitate to make it a part of your collection.
