Medium Box ArtIf someone told you that there was a show out there that offers a psychic mother who sees ghosts and can provide clues to murders when no clues exist would you believe me? If you said no, then it’s likely that you have never watched Medium. Despite the subject matter, Medium is surprisingly realistic, which could explain why so many people love this hit show. Medium is a show that most people can enjoy. Filled with special guests, excellent acting, and an interesting and eerie sense of reality, Medium hits all the right notes for a successful thriller-drama.

The reason that the realism is present could be because the show revolves around real life medium, Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette). The thing that leads to its believability is that there is much more to be seen beyond the psychic activity. The sense of every day life is one that allows you to see Dubois in a light that is brighter than the standard psychic. You see her as a person with a family life and a daughter who seems to be able to see ghosts and visions of her own.

Release Info:
The Third Season of Medium was released by Paramount Pictures on DVD on October 16, 2007. The fourth season has been picked up by NBC, where the show started, and is slated to begin sometime in the 2007/2008 viewing season. Medium has always had a huge following thanks to smart writing and star power.

The Medium Plot:
Allison DuBois is the mother of three children Ariel (Sofia Vassilieva), Bridget (Maria Lark), and Marie (Miranda and Madison Carabello). She has a seemingly normal life with her husband Joe (Jake Weber) who is incredibly supportive of his wife and family. There is just one thing that is different about Allison. As a medium, she is able to see ghosts and often has psychic visions.

Allison works as a part time consultant to the district attorney by using her powers to help solve crimes that her boss, Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) does not have the power or clues to solve. Medium is a grim look at violent crimes that come to life with intelligent writing and superb acting.

Often, the show will include a disturbing dream of Allison’s that will become the basis for the show. From there, the mystery commences moving forward with Allison having horribly terrifying visions, which go along with the story. Allison works with the district attorney and the police department who learn the truth of the crimes thanks to her, which lead to the crime being solved successfully.

As Allison dreams, her visions are the most vivid and shocking. Often in a dream reference it is impossible to know what the truth is and what is merely a nightmare. This is one of the things that add to the suspense of the show as a whole.

Allison’s husband Joe has a chance to deal with some dramatic issues first hand in the third season. He is a strong central character unlike other shows that have a female lead. The marital bond that is shown could easily be considered realistic. Meanwhile, the children are filled with amusing moments, as most children are.

When Allison is at work, the show is distinctly darker and more mysterious. While things could easily spiral out of control, Devalos keeps things together as well as he can. Unwilling to deal with nonsense, he protects his men (and women) while making sure everything is done to solve the crime in question.

The third season offers some amazing guest stars including Jason Priestly and Neve Campbell. While the guest stars are nice, the show’s success comes from the supernatural mysteries that have a rare realism to them.

Audio/Video:
Medium on DVD is presented in a widescreen format that has been enhanced for 16:9 television. The images you will see are clear and have retained the sharp quality that comes with the television HD quality that you are offered if you watch the show on NBC. Sound is available in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound so you can expect the best in this department.

Special Features:
There are quite a few extras included with the season three set of Medium. Special features include standard offerings like commentaries with the cast and crew, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. There are also several featurettes including “Drawing on Dreams”, “Directing with David Arquette”, “Acting is my Racquet”, “The Story of Medium Season 3″, and “The Making of Medium Season 3″.

Bottom Line:
Medium is one of the most engaging supernatural shows on television. The writing is ingenious and the acting is well portrayed. The storylines may be hard to believe, but if anyone can pull them off it is the cast and crew of Medium. This season three set is packed with high energy, plenty of drama, and a refreshing family dynamic. Fans of the series will not want to miss picking up this set. If you are new to the show, chances are you will still want to check it out as it offers much more than the typical show. You will definitely want to check this one out if you have the chance.

I am the proud Papa of a son, Dylan Michael Keller. Other than spending time with my son, I have two main obsessions in life; video games & movies. Often, the two accompany time spent with Dylan. I've been married to Andrea for 13 years this December. One thing I've learned about married life is to always expect the unexpected. After nearly eleven years with just the three of us, and our Golden Retriever, Braeden, I've just found out I'm going to be a dad again. In my professional life, I'm a bit of a cyber geek. I enjoy D&D, writing stories, role-playing, computer games, working on websites, and just hanging out. I work for a computer firm doing computer-tech type work and that's all I can really say about my job. In my fantasy life, I escape to the world of film. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen The Return of the King at least 37 times. I signed up to review movies, and you can guarantee I'll do the job right. I hope you enjoy my reviews and always remember kids...Make Love, Not Warcraft.
