Carlos Mencia is a comedian unlike any other. Mencia is loud, brash, and says whatever is on his mind. Believing that laughter is the ultimate medicine, Carlos makes fun of everyone and everything whether you are white, black, Hispanic, Asian Pacific Islander or anything in between. When it comes to Carlos, he’s the epitome of a Mexican (a joke he tells because of his actions and skin color), even though he was really born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Prior to his show, Mind of Mencia, I found Carlos to be one of the funniest comedians on the circuit. His brash politically stated humor has always struck a chord in me and I loved watching him. Sure, for some he is an acquired taste and for others he’s not acquired at all, but for the most part Carlos offers a healthy dose of laughter.
Mind of Mencia is an extension of Carlos’ comedy. In sketch comedy form this 30 minute show offers Carlos doing stand up and Carlos in costume. Many of the episodes had me laughing nearly from start to finish. Even the ones that are not constantly funny (some things are hit and miss) had plenty of laughs in them.
Mind of Mencia Uncensored Season 3 is being released by Paramount Studios and Comedy Central on October 23, 2007. There are 14 episodes in the third season of Mind of Mencia. Every show offers a good deal of stand up, at least two sketches, and the occasional special celebrity guest (or little person). Though this doesn’t come as a surprise to me at all, this is one of Comedy Central’s most popular shows. One of the reasons that Mind of Mencia is so popular is most likely because Carlos does not hold back. In one show you will hear racial slurs, politically incorrect humor, and sexist comedy. Nothing is safe with Carlos as he will make fun of everything from fast food to religion. If there is a funny angle you can rest assured that Carlos will find that angle.
Carlos begins every episode bitching comically about whatever seems to be on his mind at that moment. As the show progresses, these thoughts lead into various sketches, which make the show even funnier. One of my favorite sketches was the spoof on Coach Carter, aptly entitled Coach Carlos. In the sketch, Coach Carlos has to try and lead a team of basketball players to victory even though the team has never won a game in the school’s 20 year history. This may have something to do with them being midgets (as Coach Carlos calls them), but he teaches them to use their asses and sends them to the championship game prepared for the worst! It’s hilarious to say the least.
Some of the best guest stars include Mario Lopez, Peter Boyle, and Brad Williams. Another memorable guest is Three Six Mafia who offer some impromptu love songs in rap style. The sketches and spoofs along with the comedy are what make the show just right.
The uncensored version of season three is absolutely hilarious. It’s offensive in many ways, but if you are an adult who loves a good laugh this will be right up your alley. Carlos has the timing thing down pat. Sure, you might say that he’s too brash or offers too much racial or politically incorrect humor, but he works to offend everyone, not just one group. It’s all in good fun. After all, laughter is the best medicine and Carlos is just trying to heal you.
Some of the best episodes include #301, where Carlos complains about all of the things that happened while he was gone and introduces Carlosaurus Rex to answer questions you could never answer for your kids (at least not like he does), #303, where Carlos introduces us to the popular game show, “Are You Smarter Than A Wetback”, and episode #311 and the skit, “The Male View”. Other great moments include Carlos’ The Price is Right, the Poetry Slam (Carlos’ brother’s poem, Damn you letter V is a riot), and all of the various dee dee dee moments.
When it comes to audio and video I had no complains. The video is presented in a full screen format. Meanwhile, the audio is offered in English 2.0 stereo sound. Both the audio and video are up to par. I had no problems seeing or hearing anything.
There are a few special features available in this box set. Special features include commentary and at least 30 minutes of deleted scenes. All in all, the special features manage to compliment an already funny season of Mind of Mencia.
I had never really watched Mind of Mencia before this DVD Box Set landed on my desk. It’s not that I don’t like Carlos, because I think he’s great. I just never had a chance to watch it for one reason or another. Thanks to this set, I am making sure that I sit aside some time to spend the occasional evening with Carlos for some unadulterated and raunchy comedy. He definitely makes it worthwhile.
