DVD Review: Experiment in Torture

Experiment in TortureIn honor of Halloween, we have been watching and reviewing a massive amount of horror movies. Distributors are putting them out in droves. Many of these movies, Experiment in Torture included, are direct to DVD releases. This means that the movie was viewed as something that was not going to be worth sending to the theaters. In other words, these movies are the worst of the worst.

This is one of those movies with little to no back story. On IMDB, the movie has a bare bones profile with no rating and about four percent of the actors listed. The movie was released by Lionsgate on October 16, 2007. The movie is a cross between a Turistas and Hostel. Of course, it’s a little lower budget, not as well thought out and lacks any form of a bigger named star.

Experiment in Torture delves into the lives of some strippers who are out to make some easy cash. My momma always told me, “If it sounds too good to be true then it must not be.” These girls apparently never had their mommas tell them that. They are offered a good sum of money to go film a fetish flick on the lake. When they arrive they are told they don’t need to worry about filming. Cameras are all around the place and the people watching are voyeurs. The girls get to make even easier money by just hanging out and enjoying life.

Unfortunately, things aren’t as good as they seem and soon the girls are being bound and tortured until they are lucky enough to die. Sure, it’s gratuitous violence. Yes, there is blood. However, this is horror. The point is not whether there is blood, but is the story worth watching. In the case of Experiment in Torture, there are some good moments, but overall I could take it or leave it and not be changed either way.

Like with Hostel, the women are tortured and murdered as a means to fill some mad man’s obsession with death. The killer sees the female body as a canvas. He uses an electric drill, a fire blower, and other instruments of torture to create the perfect piece of art.

The problem with Experiment in Torture is that no time is taken to develop the characters. It is obvious that the writer had a goal in making this a film about torture and that’s all that mattered to him. However, the problem becomes that not one of the girls stands out from the next. You don’t really care about their deaths. In many cases, you don’t even know the name of which one is going to get it nor does it matter.

There are some good and bad characters, but none of them really stand out. The goal of murder is accomplished and it’s a flat film otherwise. It’s rather sad, because the story could have been developed in a much nicer way. While I compared it to Hostel and other films, this really doesn’t do the comparison justice.

Audio/Visual
Experiment in Torture is presented in a full screen format with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. There was no problem with the quality of the film. It came through easy to see and hear. There was little to no grain and it was a decent experience overall in this area.

Special Features
Other than basic trailers for Lionsgate, there were no actual special features on this disc.

Bottom Line:
Experiment in Torture was not the worst horror movie I have ever seen. That’s reserved for Borderline Cult or Amityville: It’s About Time. Of course, it wasn’t the best movie either by a long shot. If you’re looking for a movie filled with blood and gratuitous violence then you just might like Experiment in Torture. I highly recommend renting this one first though, as you may find out that it’s just not worth adding to your collection.
