I Love New YorkIf we changed the title, “I Love New York” to “I Hope New York Chokes on a Chicken Bone” you would be closer to my feelings about this DVD. Somewhere along the lines music stations quit playing music and when this happened, VH1 became convinced that they are a reality TV network. As a result, they began showing those outlandish reality shows that you couldn’t find anywhere else. While shows like The Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club can be amusing, I Love New York borders on completely annoying and stupid.

The show revolves around one woman, Tiffany “New York” Pollard. New York and her mama are checking out the available men to ensure that Tiffany can get a hook up. Tiffany came to VH1s attention when she was a contestant of both seasons of Flavor of Love, Flavor Flav’s dating show.

I love New York goes along the same lines as Flavor of Love. New York dominates a house full of twenty men all looking to get with her. In order to win New York’s attention the contestants need to endure lame nicknames and go through a series of tests. Being as thorough as you would expect New York to be, she tests the men on their ability to make money, their parenting skills, and their physical abilities. New York has some other judges along with her to help her along the way, but the only one worth paying attention to is her dog, affectionately known as “Her Majesty.”

I am not sure if these men are just hard up for dates or feel this is their stepping stone to fame (not that anyone generally becomes famous off the cusp of reality television), but there is no way that I would go through the little contests they do just for the attention of someone who had to have her own dating show to get picked. Some of the tests include participating in a basketball lesson with a WNBA star, having their ex-girlfriends spend some time with New York, bringing their mothers to the dating house, and even hosting a slumber party for ten, eleven year old females. For the record, it is really as bad as it sounds.

To further add to the stupidity of this show, before the episodes even begin, New York pops on the screen for an announcement to tell you how the season ends. If you even want to watch this the whole way through, you will want to be careful about that otherwise it will ruin the show for you.

I try to be fair and find something positive in every review I do. Unfortunately I think the only thing good about I Love New York was that it ended at some point. The men seemed so willing to do anything that it’s impossible to imagine that any woman would really want them. No girl likes a guy that will do anything for her. They like to be told no sometimes. If they didn’t, they would buy dogs.

This DVD box set is presented in a full screen format, in an unrated form. This means you will get to enjoy all of the things that VH1 couldn’t air on the show. This includes adult situations, bad language, and some nudity. When it comes to special features, there are not any included with these discs, but as the discs offer the unrated version there will be some new content that you have not seen if you are watching the show for the second time around.

I Love New York is an absolute train wreck. How it made it on television is beyond my scope of comprehension. However, this disc is here and available to fans of the show. I highly recommend that if you have not seen this show you save yourself the trouble and remain clueless to New York’s charms because she doesn’t have any worth watching. If you insist on watching it, check out the second season on VH1 before buying anything or rent this at your local Blockbuster first.

Note: This only got 1/2 a star because it had no bonus features. Had it been chocked full of extras, believe me when I say it would have gotten zero stars.
