My first experience with Amy Grant came in the form of songs like “Baby Baby”, “Lucky One”, and “I Will Remember You”. I do not recall her Christian music before the pop or after the pop, but then my experience with Gospel is about as deep rooted as the Time Life commercials where it shows the Christian revivals with the people swaying and pointing upwards while someone sings gospel.
Beyond that my only experience would be Faith Plus One, which was actually Eric Cartman’s Christian band on South Park. While Cartman makes one hell of a Nazi, he wasn’t so hot at the Christian thing, though his songs were great.
Needless to say my experience with Grant was minimal at best and I wasn’t particularly sad to see her go. I can appreciate that in her genre Amy Grant has sold millions of records. In fact, the majority of her albums have been platinum or gold selling records. Obviously Grant is popular though with the things I normally listen to, she is never really heard. It’s like asking a good ol’ boy who TI or Necro is. I bet most of them wouldn’t know.
I had heard quite a few songs that were on the first half of the CD. Grant was once a well played singer on the pop radio stations, so at one time it was hard to miss her. She was quite popular with the girls that I knew, but I was not a huge fan. She just didn’t do it for me. I compared her to the bubblegum pop princesses. She wasn’t one to act out like they do now, but her songs were lacking substance other than to sell records to teenie boppers. The only one I truly remembered was the one everyone remembers, “I will Remember You”, which is track nine on this new CD.
As I listened to the first half, I wasn’t offended nor was I excited. I listened and as the songs went along they went from mainstream to gospel. As the transition progressed, I found myself waiting for the end even faster than I had before. It’s not that I have anything against Grant’s singing I just didn’t prefer the tone of the music. I find that if you cannot appreciate the beat or the lyrics then there isn’t much for you to like. This was exactly the problem for me. I couldn’t relate to her lyrics so there was no possible way that they could move me.
There were nineteen songs chosen on Grant’s greatest hits track list:
1. Simple Things
2. Takes A Little Time
3. Lucky One
4. House Of Love
5. Baby Baby
6. Every Heartbeat
7. That’s What Love Is For
8. Good For Me
9. I Will Remember You
10. Lead Me On
11. Saved By Love
12. Stay For A While
13. Find A Way
14. Thy Word
15. Angels
16. El Shaddai
17. In A Little While
18. Father’s Eyes
19. Old Man’s Rubble
This CD is highly recommended for people that love gospel. If you love Grant’s pop work and are not a fan of gospel then I highly recommend you just spend a few dollars on her old CDs because over half of her greatest hits will be music that you just won’t want to listen to, due to the genre of the music.
