The 80s was known for its share of excellent movies. Many of those movies seemed to have a dancing based theme. One of those movies was Flashdance and it was actually one of the more popular movies of the decade. The movie is somewhat of a fish out of water tale of the most basic terms.
Alexandra or Alex (Jennifer Beals) is a welder by day and a club dancer by night. The Pittsburgh native has big hair and bigger dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She wants to dance for the repertory ballet company. However, she is so scared of failing that she keeps doing her natural thing and doesn’t pursue her dream.
Alex is a smart girl and has a lot of support around her. Her boyfriend (Michael Nouri) supports her and her dreams completely. She is also influenced by her friends who also have dreams. Richie (Kyle Heffner) works as a short order cook while he dreams of being a comedian and Jean (Sunny Johnson) who has dreams of becoming a championship figure skater. If all of this support didn’t convince her it was bound to happen with the help of her mentor, Hanna (Lilia Skala) who insists that Alex has a talent and must go through with an audition.
Flashdance is one of those feel good movies. It’s all about having dreams and going out and chasing those rainbows. Dreamers love this movie because it offers the right amount of passion and drive mixed with the dramatic element that makes going out and getting what you want so special.
It’s important to remember that this is one of those predictable films. However, if you watch for amusement and don’t expect too much you won’t be let down. Overall this movie is one that is worth watching. If you miss the 80s you will love this. The film was made in the 80s so you get the whole nine yards with the dance styles, clothes, hair, and music.
When it comes to special features this special collector’s edition this DVD has plenty to sink your teeth into. The special features include The History of Flashdance, The Look of Flashdance, Flashdance: The Choreography, Flashdance Music and Songs, the teaser and theatrical trailers, and Releasing the Flashdance Phenomenon. You can’t beat all that when it comes to special features.
Take Flashdance for what its worth and you will have a great time watching it. It’s a semi-dramatic, feel good 80s movie. Thanks to the new version of this old release including all of the special features, it is definitely worth picking up if you are a fan.
