Showtime’s hit series Dexter will be entering season two in September. Like most Showtime viewers, I have seen the promos and the commercials, but I had not had a chance to see the show. In fact, until last night I had no idea what it was about. Now that I know, I love the concept! Dexter is a serial killer, but there is so much more to him than that. Working as the blood splatter expert for the Miami police department, Dexter is a vigilante who murders killers. In an off handed sort of way he’s a sick good guy.
Dexter shuns sex and loves blood. He’s a sociopath. He has no emotions. Some of this might be due to his abusive parents that landed him in a foster home. Of course, Dexter was lucky. He ended up with a good family and a sister, who he would love, if he had any feelings at all. He also has a girlfriend, but as a victim of domestic violence she is as disturbed as he is, just in a different sort of way.
Dexter’s girlfriend, Rita (Julie Benz) has two kids that Dexter is actually very good at parenting. It’s almost ironic that someone who appears to be so nice can be such a bad, bad boy. It has to be hard being him though. His sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and his girlfriend have no idea that Dexter is the heartless murderer that he is.
Dexter is played by Michael C. Hall. Prior to Dexter he had been acting for a few years and was in a handful of things. Dexter is his first big gig and he handles it with all of the passion and effervescence that you would expect of someone playing the part of a serial killer.
As you watch the show you are taken through the worst areas of Miami as you watch murders that are committed by Dexter and others. Dexter often narrates and allows you to hear his thoughts as things happen, which gives you some insight into who he is. In the first few episodes you learn quite a bit. It only took me one to know that I had to see the rest. I have been watching them nonstop since that moment in preparation for the upcoming season.
Considering the subject matter, you might think it hard to imagine the show is funny, but Dexter is very quirky in a dry, ironic humor sort of way. He is funny, but it’s dark humor. However, the show as a whole fits into my favorite categories of drama and thrillers.
If you want something new, exciting, and completely original you should check out Dexter. This is just one of many awesome original series in the Showtime lineup. If I have a chance to pick this up on DVD I will give it an official review. Until then, it’s back to catching up on lost episodes with my favorite do-gooding serial killer.

Yeah! I feel guilty liking the show, but it is quite good! Showtime really stepped up with Dexter and The Tudors!
