BackyardigansThe Backyardigans has been delighting audiences of all ages since 2004. The hit Nick Jr. series is designed for an audience between the ages of 2-5, though it seems to have developed a following with older audiences. In fact, it’s been said that pre-teen and teen siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents (as well as great-grandparents) all enjoy the show with or without preschool and toddler age children around! There are plenty of reasons to see why this show is so loved. From the adorable characters to the infectious music, the Backyardigans has a little something anyone can enjoy, especially if they have an imagination.

This show is unpretentious compared to other children’s programming. The concept is neat because the primary focus is to not only teach children lessons, but to teach them one of the most important life lessons, how to use their imagination. The show is musical with plenty of song and dance numbers, which will get your toes tapping. I found myself humming the songs long after the DVD had stopped playing thanks to its infectious tunes. It should be noted that the music of Cyndi Lauper is a part of this special, with Cyndi herself singing the main song about “The Lady in Pink”.

The Backyardigans is now making history and ringing in a new fall season of shows with its very first primetime movie. Now fans of the show can watch an hour long special that is entitled Super Secret, Super Spy. The movie is an hour long and starts at 7:00 PM ET on Monday, September 17, 2007. The series features all of your favorite Backyardigans characters in multiple settings as the characters take you to Miami, London, Switzerland and the Caribbean.

For those who may not know about the Backyardigans, the show revolves around five friends. Pablo is a penguin who is energetic and easily excitable. He can be a bit uptight and fret about things, but he also has an incredibly determined nature. Pablo’s best friend is the moose Tyrone. Tyrone is a thinker who is more confident then most of the other Backyardigans and has a more laid back approach to life. The two share their backyard with three other kids.

There is Uniqua, an unusual and interesting girl, who is also of the species Uniqua. She is purple with pink spots, and has a caring, fun, and sometimes adventurous nature. Tasha is a girly girl. This hippo is often considered the bossiest of the bunch. She’s also skeptical and tough, making her a good contrast with the rest of the group. Finally, there is shy Austin. This bouncy Kangaroo can have fun, but also is often reluctant about joining in on each adventure.

In Super Secret, Super Spy, Pablo plays Agent Secret. He’s an international super secret, super spy. He works for Miss T (Tasha), who is the head of the International Super Secret, Super Spy agency. Miss T let’s Agent Secret know that he must get three canisters before the most sinister, most evil evil-doer in the world, the Lady in Pink (Uniqua) and her henchman (Tyrone) can get them. Agent Secret must travel to London, Switzerland, and the Caribbean, where he will dance against a simulation dance screen (think Dance, Dance Revolution) in order to get the canisters before the Lady in Pink can get them. You don’t want to mess with the Lady in Pink though. She’s deceptive…with her newest evil invention…a tickle machine!

This movie was engaging, even for an adult to watch. With such adorably drawn characters, it’s hard not to want to watch them. Of course, one of the best parts was Agent Secret’s super car. Able to morph into a boat, helicopter, and snowmobile, this car was reminiscent of the James Bond car. It even had an apple juice shaker, since Pablo…er Agent Secret likes his apple juice shaken. This reference was amusing to me as an adult, though it would probably go over the heads of most children who are between 2 and 5.

The quality of the show/DVD was impeccable. It was clear, crisp, and easy to watch on any type of DVD player, even a portable one. The sound was also clear. The songs came through loud and clear, with very little trouble at all for hearing what was being sung or spoken. I noticed on the Nick Jr. Backyardigans site, parents can download, sing-a-long sheets as well as other Super Secret, Super Spy fun sheets.

Bottom Line: With fun song and dance numbers, a plot that flowed smoothly and lessons to be learned, the new Backyardigans movie is a winner. While children will love this new adventure they can go on with Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha, Uniqua, and Austin, don’t be surprised if plenty of adults check out the new movie The Backyardigans: Super Secret, Super Spy themselves…with or without the kids around.

The DVD for The Backyardigans will be released on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. So, make sure to get a copy while you can!
