The first time I heard Colbie Caillat’s name was when a representative emailed me about reviewing her album, Coco. Only listing the best things, I was told about how Colbie was an absolute “rags to riches” smash on Myspace. Having started her own music page, her page views led her to a career in music.
The facts are that many writers tend to embellish their facts. There is no doubt that Colbie has a Myspace page, but let’s face it, a million other artists do and they don’t end up being reviewed by anyone or getting picked up by a major record label.
However, a million other artists do not have parents who live in Malibu and a father who once produced Fleetwood Mac albums. Talk about connections. With a family like that who needs Myspace? However, it is not my place to judge how she got her CD; it’s to judge the CD as a whole.
I will admit that I had to listen to this CD twice. The first time that I put the CD in I began listening and then found myself flipping to songs looking for something to find interest in. However, as I did not listen to any one entire song I decided to give it another shot. I have conflicting emotions to say the least. Colbie has no problems with her voice. She can sing and she sings well for the most part.
However, that being said I just did not favor her CD. I have thought about this a lot. It’s not that she offers something I wouldn’t like. I think, more than anything, I am not fond of the lack of originality. Maybe this was because it was the first album, but everything that was on this CD sounded like something I had heard before.
Colbie’s voice may be good in the sense that she can sing, but if we’re talking about musical voice it’s almost like she hasn’t found a voice at all yet. The instrumentals were static and common in the music world. This made the music very safe as far as entertainment value goes. People like what they have heard before. This CD sounds like it was meant to be a no fail venture. Unfortunately, to the people out there who hear a new artist and want to hear something new, this CD was boring and uneventful.
Colbie comes up sounding fine, but too predictable for my tastes. I imagine she will fare well with the teenage crowd (younger girls) who listen to music about boys, love, heartbreak, and relationships. However, if you want something with more substance this isn’t going to be for you.

Here today, gone tomorrow. Sounds like she has unfair advantages.
