Every now and then a show is created that really hits home. These shows are educational, offer a message, and are a perfect fit for the entire family. They make you want to stand up and do something with your life. Most importantly, they make you realize that it’s not too late to try and make a change. This is the quick summary for the Sundance Channel’s new show, Big Ideas for a Small Planet.
Big Ideas for a Small Planet is part of The Green, the first regular programming of its kind where the environment is concerned. Presented by Robert Redford, each show focuses on the environment and highlights the best of the best people and things to do to save our planet before something happens that we cannot fix.
With a show like this it only makes sense to focus on kids for at least one show. This is exactly what Big Ideas for a Small Planet has done with their first episode. Kids and people who work with them to make the world a better place have been highlighted in this 30 minute episode. You will watch in amazement as students from Los Angeles dig everything from car seats to plastic bottles out of bodies of water. In fact, they drag out enough stuff to build a boat. Later, the kids protest in hopes of removing plastic and Styrofoam in order to make the world a better place.
You will learn that there are good alternatives for these products that are biodegradable. It is quite inspiring to see teenagers fight for a better planet. Imagaplay is also highlighted for their amazing work making green toys. These toys are not only adorable they are also eco-friendly. Kids love them and they also help to get them in the groove to think and look for the environmentally friendly ways to benefit the planet.
Big Ideas for a Small Planet always highlights the best of the best in each episode. This episode highlights Evan and his Red Dragon Team. Despite being a young boy, Evan raises at least $500 each year to help save the rainforest. He owns at least 16 acres of rainforest land through the “adopt an acre” program and continues to fight to protect the land and the creatures that dwell on those lands. He also speaks to other children and adults inspiring them to raise funds to help save the earth. At his age it is inspiring and motivating to see someone fighting so hard to make a difference. While most adults tend to be cynical, assuming one person cannot make a difference; Evan will make you at least want to try.
The end result is something that the entire family needs to watch and discuss together. Big Ideas for a Small Planet gives people a reason to watch educational television. It is insightful, pleasing to watch, and does a great service to those who want to help the planet rather than neglect it as it has been for too long.
