Nothing gets you into a Halloween mood more than an 80’s horror flick. The Night of the Demons is laughable in some parts, jump-scary in others, and makes for a good time all around. I would not call this movie straight out scary, but it’s definitely amusing enough to waste a few hours watching it on a boring, fall night.

The premise is simple. There are 10 teenagers and it’s Halloween Night. There is a party being thrown by one of them, Angela (the weird EMO girl from school), at the local abandoned funeral parlor, Hull House. There is a mix of kids that will be showing up. We have 2 jocks both with dates (one date is a virgin), the token black horror movie guy (there’s always at least one in every 80s horror movie), a badass, a slob, a slut, and a girl that blends into the walls. So, everyone is represented. As you are introduced to Hull House, one of the jocks informs his friends about the legend that surrounds the property. There is an underground stream with a huge wall built on top of it. The one side of the stream is considered safe land while the other side, the side Hull House is on, is considered to be evil. In fact, it’s so evil that before it was closed a man and his family were brutally murdered in the house. |
One of the family members did it and then committed suicide, but there was so much blood that no one could figure out which one did it or what really happened. Even the Maid was axed. Sounds like a good place for a party right?
It does not take long for the demons to come out and possess the teenagers one by one. Soon the non-possessed kids are running for their lives! Once the possessions come into play you are sure to see some interesting moments. One of the most popular scenes involves the slut character, Suzanne. Suzanne becomes possessed, so she spends time drawing designs all over her face and body with her lipstick. Eventually, she gets tired of drawing on herself and shoves her tube of lipstick into her nipple. It is quite a scene! It surely isn’t scary but it is definitely worth a laugh.
The DVD was decent quality and has quite a few special features including more than one trailer and commentary on the film. The opening scene, before the movie starts, is definitely longer than I would have preferred. Rather than take a moment or two and slip into the movie they decided to play an entire song. The music, your basic, electofunk, 80’s score, was slightly annoying and threatened to make me fall asleep, but I did make it to the end of the music and to the movie.
All in all Night of the Demons is a classic Halloween horror-flick that you will not want to miss. If you’re looking for something of good quality with high class actors you might want to skip this one…but that’s not really what horror films are supposed to be about.
Night of the Demons will not let you down if you want a classic, guilty pleasure, horror film. As of now, I have yet to see Night of the Demons 2 and 3, but I am sure they are going a tad too far, even for me. I guess only time will tell, but for now I will stick with the original.
